Outside of signup bonuses, unless you're loyal to a particular airline or alliance (or 2 or more if you fly often), a general travel card with a large AF like Chase Sapphire Reserve, US Bank Altitude Reserve, or Citi Prestige will be more rewarding. A little lower on the list with significantly lower annual fees would be cards like Chase Sapphire Preferred or Citi Premier. Even for purchases on a particular airline, these general travel cards will often be more rewarding than airline-specific cards. Certainly run the math for your annual spending to see if a high AF card will outweigh the rewards from a lower AF card.
If you DO want to go all-in with one of those two airlines, Chase offers a multitude of United cards, and there are a lot of options for American with both Citi and Barclaycard. If obtaining elite status (or a higher one) is going to be important to you, possible lounge access other than Priority Pass with the very high AF cards, and/or you often check bags, then an airline-specific card may make more sense.
If those were my choices between united and American I would take American , you have four potential cards to choose from with American. Two personal and two biz. United has the option of the plethora of ur cards in addition to the United only card . If you are 4/24 you probably could only get one of the chase personal cards , as far as I know Citi and Barclays aren't as sensitive about 5/24 but not 100 percent sure about that.
I do have the CSP 14.9K
was looking for airline card so i wouldnt have to pay bag fees
In which case, definitely look at the various offerings from Citi, Barclaycard, and Chase. If you fly both AA and UA, it may even be worth getting both. Also, if your CSP is over a year old, do the math and see if upgrading to CSR makes sense. After the $300 travel credit, it's really only $150 vs $95 but the earnings are 50% more on travel and dining, it comes with more benefits, and if you were to redeem in the portal you get a 50% bonus rather than 25% bonus on URs.
yes it will be 1 year in feb on the CSP.
I'm looking to travel to Rio this year and want the best deal i can get.
CSR would work if i can upgrade.
A $14.9K CL means that you already meet the other core requirement to qualify for a CSP to CSR upgrade. You can call in the day after your 1 yr anniversary and request an upgrade - takes about 3 minutes for them to confirm eligibilty and complete the upgrade process if you're eligible.
I would get a citi american airline plat select. The reduced mileage award may help offset the AF.
If you have any choice, which you do, United is not worth the loyalty of any kind, the shameless company has the gall to ask for 5000 spending to reach the lowest tier of elite status. Greedy bastard, lol.

Citi AA Platinum Select has a promotion right now which is 40,000 bonus miles on 2k spend plus a $200 dollar statement credit on your flight.
So you could pick it up at checkout if you wanted and have it for your flight so long as you are purchasing at least 3 weeks out or so to give the Citi card time to arrive.
CSR discount on flights is nice but it will drain your points. At a $700 dollar ticket to Rio it will be $466.66 dollars or 46,666 points. I guess if its one ticket to buy that is ok. But you could instead open that AA card, get $200 off your flight and 40,000 miles for future use (which is good for about 4 round trip short haul plane tickets).
I would go for the Barclays card first as they are reportedly more inquiry sensitive than Citi. I would personally go for the business card if qualified, if not qualified, go for the personal card. If you are flying American anytime soon, I would wait and get the pamplets they pass out in flight as they contain a referral code for more miles. You can always ask for one.
