AmEx SPG App Approved + Credit Line Reallocation - What???

Hey, guys.

I apped and was approved for the AmEx SPG on Friday. I got the 14-day message at first. I called and they just needed ID verification. CSR ran the app and approved for $13,200. Why such a non-rounded amount, I wondered...

I checked online when I got home, and they pulled some of the line from my Amex Gold Delta. CL down from $21,000 to $12,800.

I called back and spoke with a couple of people. I let them know I didn't ask for or approve any reallocations of credit. The last person I spoke with finally told me it was done automatically by the system. I asked her if it had anything to do with the maximum amount of credit Amex is willing to give me altogether. She said that sounds very likely. They offered to do a CLI request, but I know that's not going to fly since I recently upped the CL on my Optima.

On the upside, CK shows no HPs on EX or EQ.

Is this normal? What is everyone else's experience with this?

Here's what I have with Amex (overall I got an additional $5,000 in credit from Amex with the rest reallocated):

OLD:

PRG - NPSL

Gold Delta - $21,000

Optima - $1,500

NEW:

PRG - NPSL

Gold Delta - $12,800

Optima - $1,500

SPG - $13,200

My plan is to get the Platinum if I see a 75 or 100K offer, close the Optima and maybe the Delta and move the CLs around.

I personally have not had any credit lines reallocated by Amex to a new card I app-ed for. I mean it's not unheard of, but I still wouldn't be too happy about it. I would do what your plan is, move around limits and get the Platinum if it will be beneficial for you.

No experience with Amex in this regard but I do know that BoA is known to do the same thing without you asking.  If they, for whatever reason, don't want to extend additional credit to you, often times they'll rob from another product to provide for the one you've app'd for.

You can go in online and re-allocate your limits back to what they were before, right? That, coupled with an extra $5K means you came out ahead in the end.

I can reallocate my limits. But, overall it's not what I expected. I didn't want to lose the $21K on the Delta card. #firstworldproblems
