Amazon Store card: Being told I submitted "duplicate" applications. How to get recon?

Hello, I was preapproved for the Amazon Store card and applied. Here's the message/email I got:

"Thank you for your interest in the Amazon Store Card. Synchrony Bank needs more information from you to make a decision. Please call Synchrony Bank at 855-296-6043 with this reference number ******** to provide that information and get a decision.

If you are no longer interested in the card, no action is required."

I called in and was told that I had been denied on a different, "duplicate" application that was submitted on the very same day. I doubt that I somehow accidentally applied twice (though, I guess it's possible). If this was really my mistake, then would there any some record of it actually happening? Like, would I have gotten two emails/messages rather than just the one I quoted above. (I mean, aside from the official 7–10 busines day email, which I'm still waiting for.)

There are two hard inquiries on my credit report now, so certainly two applications were processed......

Does their response even make sense? Why would they give me a reference number and ask for "more information from you to make a decision" if I was already declined on another application minutes or seconds (presumeably) before?

Hi @goldfishin - welcome to the community.

Whenever that message displays that usually means that you may have inadvertently submitted another application or refreshed the screen. I would wait until you get confirmation by mail to determine why the first application didn't take or if further information is required.

Re: Amazon Store card: Being told I submitted "duplicate" applications

Update: I got my reason for rejection:

"Prior application submitted too recently"

Since I've never applied before that day, this means I was denied on my SECOND (accidental) application, not on my first as I was led to beleive by the Synchrony phone rep. The FIRST application was the one for which they said I needed to call in to provide more information for a decision. When I called in, they said they could no longer even consider this (first) application because I had been denied on the other (second) application. What should I do?

Well assuming they didn't do either application, you could always try and argue with Synch Bank to remove the hard pull (if one was given) and try again.

But if I were you, I wouldn't attempt with Synch since they would love to give you the run around on a lot of stuff.

Personally, I would wait for the other letter to confirm the actual reason(s) for the application being denied -- if there is likely a direct number and/or reference number to contact the actual department that may need the additional information. Often times, an agent may be reading from a script and potentially not be well-versed on the process.

There's been a few threads with similar outcomes where members were able to get verified and approved, if anything.

Re: Amazon Store card: Being told I submitted "duplicate" applications

Yeah, seems like I'll just have to wait for the letter on the first application—I called in just now and I was told that a decision on the first application had been made on Dec 1 (five days after I applied, but two days after I initially called in to try to give them the extra info they asked for).

I expect I'll be denied, since I never so much as had the opportunity to give them whatever info they wanted. They just flatly refused to consider the first application after seeing that the second application was denied. Kinda irritating, but I guess I should have taken more care to not submit duplicate applications (however that may have happened).

How to get recon for Amazon Store card?

The only state reason for my denial was: "Credit Bureau reports different address on file." (I moved about 3–4 months ago and had used my new address.)

My understanding is that Synchrony typically doesn't do recons, except possibly in cases like mine where the reason for rejection has to do with identity verification. When I called in, however, the rep said it just couldn't be done. Is there some trick to asking for a recon? I've seen other posts that report both successful and unsucessful recons.

Amazon store card recon? (Denied for ID verifcation issue)

The stated reason for my denial was "Credit bureau reports different address on file." I understand that Synchrony typically doesnt do recons, except occaisionally in cases like mine where the reason for denial has to do with ID verifcation/suspected fraud. But no luck when I called in and talked to an on-shore customer service manager. He said it just couldn't be done.

This manager said all I could do is reapply—and that I should wait six months if I wanted a chance at being approved. Had he said one or two months, I'd just wait. But six months? After prequalifying and then being denied for ID verification issues?

Any thoughts about my prospects of geting around a six month wait? Tips on dealing with Synchrony?

I asked the manager if there was someway to bypass the wait time, e.g., by getting a manual review of a new applicaiton. He said manual reviews can only be triggered when an application gets flagged for one by the automated review process, but mine will just be automaticallly denied for next six months. (And that would be for the same reason I'm now denied whenever I check preapproval: "No. Prior application submitted too recently").

Edit: I actually got three wildly different answers to the question how long I needed to wait to reapply depending on who I asked. One frontline phone rep told me one month; another (the one whose manager said six months) told me one week. I just been assuming that the manager knows more about it than them.

Do you have multiple addresses on your file ? That would the first thing I would address before trying again . Have you checked ALL your reports ? The big three, Lexus nexus etc?

Re: Amazon store card recon? (Denied for ID verifcation issue)

As @Jnbmom stated, I would verify with the credit bureaus to insure your current address is listed as current. I had to do that awhile back because the addresses were listed out of order. I haven't had a problem since. On one report I had all other addresses deleted. The other two reports I kept the last two previous address so that only three addresses reported maximum.
