American Express Platinum

Planning on a Disney trip and hoping for - but not expecting - a bonus offer, I applied for the AmEx Platinum. I was expecting another pop-up stating that I would not be eligible for the bonus offer. I was going to shrug it off after some frustrated grumblings and just use one of my cash back cards.

The stupid application went into pending status instead. Cat Frustrated

Some data points for those interested:

0/12, 2/24

My reports are locked.

I have 2 previous AmEx cards, and I recently started putting more spend on my 2nd one due to two planned trips in the next couple months.

Since receiving the 2nd AmEx, I have been denied a bonus offer although I have not closed either of the cards since opening them.

No negatives.

My FICO 08 TU is 807. Don't know the others but probably high 700s, low 800s as they have been for years now.

Util 1%.

Anyone know how soon I might hear back from them? Will it show up on my AmEx app if approved before I hear from them? If approved, will they let me know prior to acceptance if they still plan to deny me the bonus offer? I'll be so upset if they approve me without the bonus offer and I lose an opportunity for 100k MR points.

Re: American Express Platinum

You can check the AENB application status link to review the progress:

https://online.americanexpress.com/eaol/statusCheckAction.do

It will not show up on your AENB account portal until you confirm receipt of the card, if approved. As far as the SUB concern, if approved, once the card is active you can reach out to them (chat or phone) to confirm that your account qualified for the new account sign up promotion. Don't refer to it as a 'SUB' when you contact them.

Re: American Express Platinum

It may be a little late now but you can call Amex new accounts and find out what the issue was- my applications both went into pending and they needed to verify miitary status and personal info, and then they approved

Re: American Express Platinum

Thanks for the link.

And, whoa!

It is listing all of my previous attempts on no fee Hilton card as either in progress or needing further information. I never went further because I got the no bonus pop up. I wonder whether this is the reason it went directly into pending.... Says to check back in 24 hours for the Platinum.

Yes, they keep track of previous entered applications, even if you decided to cancel at a specific point during the application.

So, you can try calling the AENB new accounts department tomorrow (or Monday) to see whether they can finalize the application or just let it hang out until you see the results sometime next week.

Re: American Express Platinum

Update:

Monday, I received an email stating that my application was approved. I called to see if the card could be sent to me expedited. The CS rep I spoke to must have been new because she put me hold to double check only to tell me no, it was already processed. I accepted that. In any case, I did receive the card today.

I also asked whether I was eligible for sign up promotion like you recommended @FinStar. She had to double check again and then told me that until I activate the card, they cannot see whether I am eligible for any "promotions".... Smiley Frustrated

I hope that I am. Otherwise, the application wouldn't really be worth it. It is already too late anyway. Smiley Sad

I think I would rather have the pop up telling me that I wasn't eligible for the sign up bonus than go through a pending application and not know for certain.

I am afraid to call again and rock the boat and possibly be told, no, you are not eligible because you seem too interested in it. Should I call?

If you've already confirmed receipt of the card or activated it, there's nothing wrong with checking again. Try their chat feature. If you feel more comfortable with calling again, no harm, no foul. It's really not rocking the boat to confirm that your account has the promotion before you engage in spending $6K.

Re: American Express Platinum

I will definitely second what @FinStar said. When I got the Amex Gold last month, I was concerned that I wouldn't qualify for the signup bonus. I had accidentally upgraded my Green card to a Gold a couple of years ago. I called in right afterwards to have the upgrade canceled, but I was unsure if that would disqualify me. I didn't get any popup when I signed up for the card. I contacted them after I applied for the card to make sure, but I was told they wouldn't be able to tell until I got the card and activated it. When I finally got the card I called back and got it confirmed that I qualified for the signup bonus. I hadn't felt that relieved in a very long time. Call back after you get it to confirm like I did. You don't want to spend $6k on it only to find out you weren't eligible after all.

Re: American Express Platinum

Not that it matters to you anymore but for anyone else reading this.  All AMEX Plat primary cardholder cards are expedited.  Any AU cards you have to ask to have expedited but it's automatic for the first one.
