1. I don't see the Platinum approval as an abberation, but as Amex testing the waters. Amex is really big on 1-year marks. If your friend can avoid making 35 more applications between now and May 2024, there's a chance Amex might be more open.
2. Historically, if you are an Amex cardholder and you see "<Name>, you are pre-approved!" when you to go apply for an Amex card, there's a good chance you'll be approved. If you see "Applying to expand your cardmembership is easy", don't apply. At least, this has been historical advice for myFICO. Anecdotally, I've only applied for Amex cards when seeing "you are pre-approved" and I've never been declined, but I did see the message switch to "applying to expand your cardmembership" for 6 months when I accidentally had a payment returned. This is in agreement with other reports on myFICO that Amex will hold a returned payment against you for at least 6 months (note: they will likely close your friend's card if they bounce a payment, since their relationship is clearly on thin ice).

I agree with this. I have never burned them, but AmEx has always been very cautious with me. They were slow with CLIs and additional approvals, but after a year or so using and paying the card correctly, they opened up slowly. However, they still don't like my lower credit score. I still get denied for new cards and CLIs, which is because I have high utilization on some other cards right now. They have been good though. They just need time, experience, and a score above 700 with no delinquencies on your credit report, IMHO.

On their risk management, I would concur @kekrre. I believe Amex takes its time to make sure you have changed since the last time.
I have burned Amex for 12K. At 6.5 years mark, they let me in through an Amex Plat. I then applied for an Amex BCP and it was turned down citing an old FICO score (689). When I tried to Rec it stating that my FICO scores are 710, not the 689 they had cited, Amex came back with a reason that they would like to see a bit more time. (I was 4/3 including the Amex Plat).
Pardon me for not recalling correctly if it was @K-in-Boston or someone else, but I recall the conversation where they had mentioned that with Amex, things get better when FICO moves past 720 range. I am waiting on my EX to hit 740 and 6 months mark to try again for the BCP.

Amex, like Chase, never forgets. I burned them for 11k on a gold in 99. I initially got back in with the Delta gold in 18. They didn't approve me for another card until 20 when I got a delta platinum and gold. I asked them to add the gold to my account before I received it so I could use it and pay on it. Tried twice. Both times they added my charged off gold from 99. So it's not surprising to me that they're referencing an older incident.

His attempts kind of look like mine, Amex doesn't like my 4yr old auto charge off
I was approved for personal platinum and no other personal cards, with 5k POT
Business applications seem to have no issue though, I was approved for Biz Gold (150k SUB) with 20k POT and then Biz Delta Reserve (110k SUB) @ 4k same day
Was recently able to get Biz Plat as well to grab the 170k offer
I tried for the Brilliant 4x, BCP, and personal Gold - all denied
i know it's fun to apply but he better stop before they cancel the Plat.
most people don't realize it but there is inherently less risk with a pure Charge Card the requires PIF.
and anecdotally I've seen people with 600 FICOs get approved for the Plat. Amex makes a killing off that card because so many people regard it as something so prestigious and many card companies try to copy it. Personally, I think it's overblown and not as rewarding in terms of cash back as many people think.
sure, if you can get a 100k or 120k bonus after a few thousand in spend, it's a good idea for year maybe or two, and the airport lounge ccess is great, but I like revolvers with higher cashback.
please tell your friend to stop or they gonna cancel his Plat. lol
@kekrreMy BCP will be a year old in a little over 2wks and I'm seeing a different message all together than the ones you're referencing on cards. I'm getting a "You may qualify to open the American Express Gold card". I was seeing the that applying to expand your card membership is easy, but it changed to this instead. Still not seeing any preapprovals in my offers for cards and I'm not planning to open anything else with Amex anytime soon. I've started getting that you're preapproved message for a personal loan popping up regularly thouguh (despitei having no use for it) so maybe they're getting a bit less skiddish. FWIW the changes in languge and the loan prepapproval started showing up after the first time I let a statement balance report and PIF shortly after. Prior to that I had always PIF this card before the statement cut. Now that I no longer do AZEO and am AZE2 I'm letting this card report a statement balance for a number of months in hopes of helping my chances of getting a CLI when I try again in a couple months (still unlikley due to my BK7).
