Amex Gold Pre-qualify

Re: Amex Gold Pre-qualify

You should wait a few days to be on the safe side to app again. You just got denied 9.21 and today is 10.19 so wait another 2 days or so just to be safely past 30 days. and if you are fly on delta ever, this is a good time to get the gold. It has one of the highest sign up bonuses (I don’t know what the prequal page showed you) but right now it’s 60k miles plus a statement credit. They are trying to get ppl to sign up by 10.30 cause they know ppl will cancel when the new higher annual fee kicks in next yr. also now your dining earns miles on delta now too. If I were you, I would app for Delta first as that’s easy to get and then do gold which you really want. But that’s just my opinion. I find that the delta cards are a lot of ppls way to get in with Amex. I did that after having burned them yrs ago. Yes you may get a $1k SL but that’s fine cause you want the gold anyways and most of your spend will be going there. and you can try for 3x CLI in 61 days. And having another revolver will help your utilization and build up your credit since Gold doesn’t report your utilization

Re: Amex Gold Pre-qualify

Thank you so much! That really helps. Actually I heard that charge card is more easier to get than credit cards, that’s why I would like to apply a charge card.

To be honest, I just need a card that I can used daily or used for booking hotels and I really like MR miles. I searched for some information, and they all said charge card is easier to apply than Amex everyday. So that’s why I want gold or plat.

Currently I got prequalified for Amex Gold, Gold Delta and Delta Reserve. I think I'm pretty sure Amex Gold is suitable for me now though I really want Amex Plat at first. Since I'm pretty new to credit card, I don't think I will get approved for plat If I applied it first. The only problem bothered me is whether should I apply using 35000 page or 50000 page. I'm a little bit afraid that if I don't apply using pre-qualify page, I will get declined. I don'r really want to get a denial twice for one card. BTW, my current Fico 8 score is 742

APR doesnt really bother me. I would pay in full each month. Amex pre-qualify tool doesn't give me a specific APR, only a range.

Does it matter or not if the apr is one or a range?  What was the apr OP?

That's my point.  I was told that a range doesn't mean diddle, needs to be a solid apr....I know when I had a range I was denied.  Just wandering about ranges for charge cards though.

The Gold is a Charge Card, so it won't come with APR anything. Unless you're granted the Pay Over Time feature, you must pay your entire balance in full at statement cut. All that said, the Gold has a 250 AF, so you need you figure that in before you make a leap. Are there features on this card that will offset the AF? If not, this is not the card for you. Also, you can try apping for a no-fee revolver and if you get approved for that, then you can immediately app for the Gold, only garnering one HP for both cards. Again that 250 AF is a big pill to swallow. MR points or not.

.

There are others on here talking about the differences in sign-up bonuses. First, it doesn't matter whet the pre-qual site says, you can get pre-qual and still be denied upon submittal of your application. So, there's that. Before, I think, jumping into the water with a charge card, you should start with a revolver.

In my case, I started with the EveryDay card, then a couple months later, they offered the Platinum to me and upon accepting the offer, they actually gave it to me! I was shocked that they would give me, "Mr. Thin File" an actual Platinum Card!! I hear of people getting a revolver all the time and later reporting that AMEX is hawking their Platinum to them. That's a $550 AF, when I had it, it was 450. I cancelled right before the new AF hit, because I had all I needed with what would become the Gold, the Premier Rewards Gold, and didn't need the Platinum anymore.

Recap: If you're going to app for the Platinum first, regardless, go for the 50k MR bonus offer, generally found using the incognito page. Again, pre-qual means nothing, especially with AMEX.

Lastly, a 742 score means nothing with a 1 yr old card and nothing else. Not trying to be rude, just up front.

ummm the plat is actually much easier to get approved for than the gold! and if you prequalified for one chargecard, it means you prequalified for all the chargecards. just get whichever one you want.

This should be my first Amex card. Do you think I will have a change get a plat? I think plat is a higher-level card of Amex.

Re: Amex Gold Pre-qualify

It's a higher AF @ $550/yr for sure.

Normally if you qualfy for one Charge you're able to get any of them... same req's

Same goes for revolvers.

Re: Amex Gold Pre-qualify

To clarify based on what’s been posted here over time:

There seems to be three tiers of attainability with Amex. On each tier, approval underwriting is equivalent - qualify for one of them and you’ll qualify for any of them.

Lowest is the cobranded revolvers like Delta, Hilton, Marriott. Often the easiest standards to meet and therefore, as mentioned above, the way in for many, myself included. Many get in around 640EX.

Second tier would be charge cards - Gold, Plat, Green. Tougher than cobranded cards but easier than core revolvers. Seems that 660EX is usually safe.

Highest tier is core revolvers - BCE/BCP, ED/EDP, Cash Magnet, Blue. These have the tightest acceptance criteria of all the cards Amex offers. 680EX as a minimum, but the higher the better to get better SLs.

The caveat to all this is being an existing member. Once you’re in with Amex and demonstrate that you can be trusted, you can often gain preapproval to higher-tier cards even if your EX scores are lower than the quoted scores above. All of it is very YMMV once you’re in. In my case, once I established with the cobranded, I was able to get a BCP with a 656EX, and four days later a Gold charge with the same score.

OP, as to your desire for Plat, where do you spend most of your money? While you can make a Plat work regardless, it’s very much geared to heavy travelers - the more you fly, the better it works for you as you get 5x MRs for booking flights, but only 1x on other purchases, for that huge AF. The access to high-end lounges and credits on Uber and the like, and conferred hotel status, can help ease the pain of $550 annually. Gold, by comparison, is very much a daily driver - MR multipliers on dining and groceries, credits for food delivery, and still 3x on booking airfare along with an annual airline incidentals credit. AF is $300 less too.

Judge your spending vis-a-vis the AFs and earning potentials before grabbing a charge card so you don’t end up paying out without recouping in your major spend categories.

Re: Amex Gold Pre-qualify

i've seen a guy who was denied a gold and then immediately apped for plat and got approved. so while all the charge cards have the same prequal requirements, the real-world approval requirements is another story. amex is willing to do a riskier approval to get that higher AF. i don't know if it's the same way on their other cards like BCE vs BCP, but maybe it is.

With over $400k in open lines and an apparently heavy investment in the Chase ecosystem, I’m thinking @Aim_High is probably set with his current lineup.
