Re: Amex

Thanks guys and thanks shadowfactor for the info. But I don't think I will even try at this point. Or for the next 6 years for that matter. My 120+ day late account from over a year ago is really hurting me. I just applied for discover 10 min ago. Denied. Called in. No review available due to that reason and short account history. Ughh. My last shot is goodwill letters which I printed up earlier today and will be sent out tomorrow but I've seen so many people have luck with discover I thought I had a good chance. People w worse scores etc. But I read that 120+ day late hurt you for 7 years and are worse or just as bad aa BK. Were you pre approved or did you cold app with amex? At this point im not gonna waste the inquiry. But curious to know. Guess I'm done reading these forums for a while. They get me too down on myself. I thought for sure discover would let me in the door. I even explained to him at the time of the late I was 21 yo and had no idea about credit etc. Guess I won't have credit til I'm 30 years old. :/ unless my GW letters work.

Re: Amex

@Roy21 So sorry you're feeling down. Believe me I know how you feel I didn't take care of my credit in my early 20's and now I'm in my early 30's and since I have gotten married and had my kids I have just gotten really steadfast on getting things in order.

It sucks when you are working hard to get things right but we have to remember we did it to ourselves and we just have to be patient and go from now and not dwell on the past.

I see people getting things on here that I'm like dang I get denied but YMMV is so true. Give yourself sometime and don't get discouraged your time is coming 😉

Re: Amex

Seriously? Over a denial?

Last June I was denied for a secured Discover. In Dec, I was approved for a regular Discover. All I had to do was let my accounts age.

Credit is not for the faint of heart.

A denial should not make you want to give up, it should motivate you to do better, so in the future there won’t be another denial.

Re: Amex

I was pre qualified for 3 Amex cards. Delta Gold, PRG, and green. Chose the delta card and app’d. Approved after verifying my home address through my bank. Got a 2K SL.

I cold app’d the next day for a BOA travel rewards. Approved for 6K SL. I was in shock, I figured I was going to need my girlfriend to co-sign for that. I needed the card for work.

How old is your 120 day late ?

Call discover back and see if they can use your pulled report for a secured card if you want your foot in the door with them. I have one, Discover is a great company with the best customer service I’ve seen from a card company. I know it’s not ideal to get a secured card, but they graduate after 7 months with good payment history. It would probably help your scores and report too if you don’t have a lot of cards open.

From what I understand, 120’s will affect your score the entire 7 years but after a good bit they will stop impacting it so much.

Re: Amex

Yeah? Seriously. And who said anything about giving up. I'm still sending out letters but if that doesnt work them yea ill be done for the next 6 years with my hands tied. There's nothing I can do. Yea you got denied and then approved 4 months later. What were your negatives like before that?  Never said I waa giving up but just like people with bankruptcies have to wait 7 years so will I. Theres no way for me to "do better" with the cards I have. I already do the best I can as it is.

Re: Amex

11 months is too recent for a serious derogatory. In a year and a bit you'll have better luck. Get a strong thick profile started with secured cards from decent banks.

A thick profile showing two years of perfect payments and low utilization and you'll start getting in with prime banks.

Re: Amex

Thanks. Ill try again in another year then. Because hey at that point who cares about a 2 year inquiry while waiting 6 years for an account to drop off.

Re: Amex

It's a painful lesson. Some of us (me) have had to learn it twice.

Try waiting 14 years to get back in with Amex.

I did.

And it was my fault. Not theirs.

Re: Amex

Fortunately for me ill only have to learn it once. They don't teach you about credit in high school. Which to me is ridiculous. So when you get out and make dumb decisions like me and many others did you screw yourself over for the next 7 years after. I was young dumb and had a bad addiction (Which is where I screwed up my one and only credit card) that I was able to overcome which then set me on the path to learning about credit etc and wanting better for myself. Only to realize how much I messed up before not just personally but financially. Just goes to show how drugs can ruin your life forever whether it be death or finances or health.
