Apple Card CLI strategy question

I know Apple likes to see usage, so I've almost maxed out the card this month. I've never carried a balance and intend to PIF before the statement date. Any thoughts on whether to PIF and then ask for a CLI, or to ask while I'm carrying a balance near the current CL?

When did you get the card?

Re: Apple Card CLI strategy question

DPs are still kinda YMMV however, I would PIF before CLI RQ. There is some talk out there that a balance reporting on Statement Date (not carried balance) was beneficial.

About 6 months ago. SL $4K, got a measly CLI to $6.25K after 3 months.

Great suggestion; I will try doing that.

Re: Apple Card CLI strategy question

Aug 2019 $6500
Dec 2019 $7500
Apr 2020 $10000
Aug 2020 $13000
Sept 2021 $14000

Above is my history with the Apple Card.

Up to 30% UTI per month.

I PIF for 22 out of 24 statements.  The reason I left a balance report on 2 was to try different tactic to get another increase from Aug 2020.

You got a 56% increase which is pretty good imo.

OK, now I don't feel so bad. Slow and steady seems to be the pattern.

It be like that with fruit Card 🤷‍♂️

Also, I wouldn't call the CLI to $6.25K measly (after 3 months) considering that they're not obligated to give anyone a CLI. Plus, a CLI after 3 months I'd say that's pretty good.  If you read around, most folks don't get a CLI that soon -- profile-specific of course.

Re: Apple Card CLI strategy question

As someone who never was able to get more than one $250 credit limit increase on my apple card before I gave up, here are some data points on what I tried (all of which failed obviously Smiley Happy)

1. Goldman Sachs uses the same credit report and payment info for at least 90 days so even if you pay something off and/or your credit profile changes, they don't look at that info for awhile.

2. Buying apple laptops and paying them off right away a couple of times didn't help me because I still wasn't using the card as a daily driver. Goldman wants the card to be one of the cards you use frequently.

3. The opinion GS had of you when you opened the card might stick with you even if your credit profile changes. My credit is much better than when I opened the apple card two years ago when it first came out. But GS hasn't changed my credit limit (except for that one $250 cli) or my apr etc. I wouldn't say that GS bucketed me, but there might be informal tiers of some sort.

In any case, use my experience as a cookbook of what NOT to do when applying for an Apple card cli. Smiley Very Happy

Re: Apple Card CLI strategy question

Slow and steady is how GS is with CLIs on the Apple Card. Here is my Apple Card CLI history:

September 2019 - $250
April 2020 - $500
July 2020 -  $1,000
October 2020 -  $3,000
January 2021 - $6,000

April 2021 - $8,000

July 2021 - $12,000

Once I had the card for six months, I started asking for a CLI every three months. I stopped asking for CLIs on this card once I reached five figures as I don't need a higher limit than that on any individual card based on my current income and spend habits.

I have my Apple Card set as the default card in Apple Pay and use it as a catch-all 2% card and also have used it to purchase Apple devices, so it has been regualry used every month I've had it. I also let a statement balance report each month although I always PIF. I have never revolved a balance on this card.

Re: Apple Card CLI strategy question

Thanks, @lgtwriter and @CreditAggie! Very interesting DPs. It seems I was lucky to get a $4K SL since my scores are relatively low.
