Apply for another card? Possibility of high limit?

So I've been super careful about rebuilding my credit since experiencing almost complete financial ruin about 8 years ago.

The short is that I currently have three credit cards, 2 of which have been opened for 2 years, the third has been open for 18 months. I haven't applied for anything since:

  • Capital One Venture: $6500: limit (heavy use, paid off monthly, great mileage especially since it offers decent rewards for airlines I actually use)
  • Capital One QuickSilver: $3500 limit (virtually no use other than a couple of small recurring charges, paid off monthly)
  • A VISA through my credit union: $3000 limit (I use this about every other month to buy supplies for a favored hobby, it's paid off the moment it has a balance. It's super low interest and I keep it in case I ever need to carry a balance.

My credit scores are: EQ: 822  TU: 718 EXP: 813  So, very good.

I think I'd like to open another card, but with possibly a higher limit than any of these. I think I'm trying to build a good sized base so I have a larger amount of credit to utilize should I need to.

  • What are my chances of getting a high-limit card (maybe 10-15K?) And if that's the goal, what products should I be looking at to get there?

Additionally, the FICO simulators seem to indicate that if I do open another card, my scores might take as much as a 25-30 point hit. I don't want that. So how accurate is that simulator?

Thanks much!

I wouldn't worry too much about having the best scores because good credit is only worth it, if you use it. Also, the more accounts you have the less hit you take when you open a new one.

Normally Navy Federal if you can get in with give generous CLs but they usually pull from TU which is your worst score.

You will have a better chance with a CU, possibly an Amex BCE. Not a guarantee, but Amex likes those with thin profiles, and who aren't credit seekers.

Whats affecting that TU score?

That TU score. Blech, I have 2 medical collections I'm working with the hospital on--$1200 total. I'm attempting to get them to pull the debt back from collections and remove from my report, (which I'm pretty sure they will do, I know others who have been successful with this particular hospital) so I can then just pay it off in full. It's just taking time, and no small amount of frustration. But, I'm actively working on it while remaining patient and calm hahaha.

Thats good. If they won't agree to recall, see if you can get CA to agree to PFD.

Most CU will pullEQ, but some will pull EX or TU. Navy pulls TU if eligible, but first card can be low approval.

Many popular CU have no problem doling a $10k limit.

To piggyback on what @blindambition said, with Navy, even if you get a low first card, don't sweat it. It will grow, and the second one is usually the whopper. You'd be eligible for that after 91 days and three statements as well as an increase on the first one. Profile-wise, you're sitting pretty. I think you'll have success when you decide to pull the trigger.
