I think she should really pick up 1-2 visa,mc, discover before gardening.
Is she being denied capital one or was she just not pre-qualified? because based on Kohls I think she could go for a Quicksilver and or Venture One.
I would try Discover based on her success of Kohls

On Cap1, it doesn't even get to the screen where it's doing its magic boxes of things it's pulling. Just goes to a second page and stops (we tried for a platinum). Can't even see where she was hard pulled on credit karma. That was leading me to believe she's blacklisted right now.
If it was myself, I'd try discover but she doesn't want anything else. I'm good with that. I'll just follow behind her and make sure her reports are squeaky clean post bankruptcy so if she ever needs a new card, she'll be able to get it.
post BK, shes NOT going to be able to get "any card". She will have a lot of success getting store cards, but majors are a different story, and with people like AMEX, Chase, Citi, BOFA....forget it till 3-5 yrs. Amex is 5-7 yrs post, depending on your profile, Chase..if you burned them...YEARS..., Citi years!!, BOFA..min 4-5 post. accept for possibly secured. DCU and Nasa is min 2 yrs post, but they have criteria to go with that!. Do your homework here, and ask pople who have had a BK, so your mom isnt applying for unneccessary cards and racking up inquires for definite denials.
Dont get her hopes up that a year from now she'll be able to go out and apply for all the big banks and get approved for major visas, because she wont. It will take some years post BK for that. Cap one, once they let her back will be the most forgiving, and eventually she'll be able to get the Venture or QS with a nice limit!!
Thats nice of you to help her get things striaght again! Definitely make sure her reports are reporting correctly $0bal/IIB...good luck!

I probably phrased that 'any card' wrong - I want to set her up in a position to be able to apply to targeted companies if they feel they might need it. I'm aware of what banks blacklist, which might be more forgiving, etc. I'm going through it myself, been researching since before my discharge (may not be a huge poster but my strengths are research and reading up from multiple sources). I also know the only card she burned in bankruptcy was her Kohls and possibly a discover (I can't remember without looking again). I also know that based on her salary, mortgage and card obligations, etc. what she could even hope or target to obtain. I've pulled her reports, combed through them, made sure they were right, researched cards with post ch7 success based on her scores and had her app for 3, yes only 3 that I thought were obtainable based on research. She's up to a whole 6 inquires on her EQ report now, she got hit twice for her car lease, once for her mortgage and 3 times for cc's.
Trying to set her up for a possible Barclays or Capital One a minimum of 1-2 years down the road, they will have been discharged 2 years in January, it's not like yesterday recent. The only pipe dream would be Discover. The targeted plan in the next 1-2 years for her is totally realistic, imo.
Ill tell you with Barclays, they want to see a min of 6 months reporting credit history with another card first before they will approve. I would also apply for their lower card like Apple Visa and Rewards MC for fair credit. Thats what I did. (not the Apple visa though).. I apped for the Rewards MC, had that card for a yr, then apped for Sallie Mae, both were instant online approvals. I just recently closed my rewards, and moved my limit over to the SM. Thats good youve done homework on this.
I never had a Discover card in my life, and was always declined even many years ago before my BK when my scores were high 780's, but they approved me instantly online 6 months ago. At the time I was 1.5 yrs post BK7. But I had also reestablished well too. Ive seen a few approvals since then for fellow BK'ers. If you IIB them, then it may be awhile for them. I want chase back , but then were burned bad for me in my BK, so Its gonna be years before Im back in, LOL..So for me, Chase is my dream card.
