I received an email earlier this week from BB/Citi saying "Happy Card-aversary!" and learned it was my ninth year with the card, without ever having an auto-CLI!
I've spent enough time on these forums to know that any CLI requests on this card trigger a HP, so I've refrained from ever doing it, but have always wondered why I've never received an Auto-CLI.
As an added tidbit, I work at BB and yesterday our Citi rep stopped by, who I've built a decent relationship with, I asked him if he knows A) whether Citi always does a HP for CLI requests, and B) Whether Citi ever does Auto CLI's on the BB cards (I know plenty of you have received auto's, but just wanted to pick his brain on the subject).
He told me that he recommends calling for a CLI within 30 days of account opening, because after that, CLI requests turn into hard pulls. He also said, to his knowledge, Citi does shoot out auto increases once in a while.
With all of this in mind, and with my credit reports all frozen, I wanted to fire off a request to increase to $5,000, basically just to see what would happen. I got a screen saying "call us so we can collect more information".
I was connected to someone foreign at first, and after explaining where I was in the process she said "let me connect you with a specialist", and I was transferred to someone in the states named Priscilla, who to no surprise, told me that there was a security freeze on my profile. I played dumb and said "oh I didn't realize there'd be an attempted hard pull on my credit, in that case never mind." I followed up with "Does Citi ever do auto-increases on accounts? Because I've been a holder for 9 years without ever seeing--" and was then cut off with a cold "No sir we do not. Is there anything else I can assist you with?"
Didnt sound like Priscilla was having a great day, so I wished her that her day would get better and thanked her for her time.
No huge revelations here, but I figured some of you might appreciate the shared insight!

No wonder some spell it chiti.
Sounds like they're as tight as usb.
About 18 months ago, I bought a $1000 item at bb. The clerk told me they'd give me $100 off I applied for their card. Knowing all three reports were frozen, I asked if I got the $100 even if turned down. He assured me, so I went for it. I was turned down, got the $100 and the purchase qualified a $200 sub on my new wells active cash! Is this a great country or what?
Btw, wells did a $8500 to $10,700 cl i at six months, no hp.

@AirPodMax Yup...they are definitely tight. I got a CLI on my BB Visa from 5K to 10K on activation with no HP in 2023, but they let me know that any request after that would be a HP.
If you use your BBY card a lot, bite the bullet and request a generous CLI even if a HP. I have a BBY card but took a coward's approach. Card SLwas $4k. Asked for a CLI to $7.5k a few years after getting the card. Instant approval but a HP. A year later asked for a CLI to $12.5k. Another instant approval but a new HP. Likely could have got $12.5k the 1st time given the HP.
After retiring I took a part-time job with BBY. The employee discounts were generous and the 6% cash back equivalent (available in 2020) toward future BBY purchases was great. The higher CL came in handy 😆.
I do find Citi to be the more stringent and unforgiving of the bunch during inquiry.
They have an excellent SUB product I want, but I'm not going to lose hard inquiries because of it. Currently hold two of their cards, with no real bonuses. Including Best Buy. Haven't shopped there in a decade. That one has been socked drawered for so long, and yet they still won't cut ties.
Interesting. I have a BB Platinum Visa and did a CLI in February, and I don't recall or see any HP from them on my reports. I got the card in November for a **bleep**in' 84-inch TV and surround sound, and was shocked they approved me, and they approved me for $4400 CLI for a $1900-2000 purchase. I got their 0% for 24 months for that to boot! Then, a few months ago, they sent me an offer for another 0% for x period BT offer, so I took that and moved a balance there. I had a Chapter 13 BK, and they were included, and I presumed they'd be super strict with me.

Thanks for the insight. Interesting that Citi sends reps around to stores, it seems to have a large retail portfolio. Next time you see them, tell them that some rando on the internet wants to know why they haven't integrated store cards into their bank app like Capital One. ![]()
I actually bit the bullet for a hard pull on my BB card recently and was approved for a small increase from I think $9 or 11K to $15K. It was worth it at the time because I had financed several appliances and keeping that kind of utilization on was hurting the scores a bit. Now since paid off in full with zero interest, of course!
I've kept this card around for the promo financing, which has been helpful at times, but nowadays I'm trying to finance less and save up more, so to the sock drawer goes the card for me.
