CapOne Quicksilver approval plan

I'm in the middle of my credit journey right now.  Two years ago, my scores were in the low 400s.  Currently, I have:

EX: 693 with 4 inq

TU: 748 with 1 inq

EQ: 726 with 1 inq

I would like to app the CapOne Quicksilver but I'm worried about getting denied after taking those 3 HPs and I would be sad.  I have a CapOne Secured that's been open for a couple of years now, it's almost maxed (oops.)  I know you can't PC and I'd rather get my $100 bucks back than hold my breath for random graduation so I'm planning on closing the card.  So my first question is should I pay off and close that card before I app for the QS?

The rest of my file looks like this:

CapOne Secured: $400/$500 as mentioned

Discover IT: $0/$2750

Marvel Sync: $0/$2000

Chase Sapphire AU: $660/$4200

AAoA: 2yrs, 5mos

I also have AMEX BCE $0/$2000 and Chase FU $0/$1500 that are new and not reporting yet.  So currently my overall util is at 8% on EX (doesn't recognize my AU card) and 12% on TU and EQ.

Do you think I have a good chance of getting the QS now, or should I close out the secured card first and wait for my new TLs to report?

Re: CapOne Quicksilver approval plan

Capital One seems to be tightening up lately, they may not be too happy about the two new accounts.

Its always a good idea to pay down your cards first but if it were me, I would try to go for a better card that will grow like cashRewards from NFCU (if eligible).

PayPal MC would be one to look at too. Your TU definitely looks good enough for it and it’s 2% instead of 1.5%.

Its actually tough to beat the PayPal MC and if I didn’t just get BBVA, it would be on my list for next year when my derogs fall off TU.

Thanks for the reply!  I'm not eligible for NFCU, and PayPal denied me.  Smiley Sad

Marvel and Discover are new too, I opened all four of them last month, but they are the only ones reporting so far.  So that might take me out of the running for CapOne?

Re: CapOne Quicksilver approval plan

If you just got FU, why another 1.5% general spending card in QS? You're no longer in the building/rebuild bucket as you're getting prime cards with scores in the low to mid 700, at this stage you should app selectively for keeper cards carefully matched with your spending habits, you don't need more than one general spending card as one of them will end up in SD.

Is your Discover IT less than a year old? If so, your non category spending should all go on that card for 2% cashback match anyway. If it's older than a year, I would rather apply for 2nd IT for another round of 2%/10% cashback match than waste a triple pull on what likely will end up an SD card.

Re: CapOne Quicksilver approval plan

4 new cards is pushing it, I would personally go in the garden.

Besides, as oldman87 pointed out, you should really be throwing everything on Discover for the first year as you get 2% on everything (1% up front, 1% on your first anniversary and you get 5% with a match of 5% at your anniversary for the rotating categories).

Capital One cards would be a waste for you at this point.

Yeah, Discover is brand new, too. I just hit my $1000 for my $150 cash back so now everything will be going to Discover for the matching.

I have a really, really stupid reason for wanting the QS card but I will try to resist.  Smiley Wink

Because you want to be a badass like Samuel L Jackson? Smiley Tongue

There is nothing special about QS, I had it in the SD for a year after getting a 2% card, finally found a way out via PC to Savor and getting some use out of it.
