I applied for a CLI on my Quicksilver card and my Chase Platinum card today. I have a ~740 credit score. Both got the dreaded "you'll hear from us in a few days" which I assume is a denial (has anyone ever been approved for one after being told they'd hear in a few days?). Last month I applied for increases and was told I was denied for "Recent use of this account's existing credit line has been too high". In ~3 years, they have never increased my insanely low limits ($500 and $750) beyond the initial bump that they give to everyone. I used to carry a balance on these, but don't anymore and haven't for several months.
Does anyone know how to get these guys to give you a higher CL? Also, I realize that I won't actually get a CLI this way, but I'm wondering how often I can apply for one. I might just start doing it every day until they either close the accounts or increase the lines. I don't care if they do close them if they won't increase the line. I was just approved for a Chase Sapphire Preferred with a $5K limit and an Apple Card with a $3K limit, so my credit is pretty good, but Crap One is still completely ignoring me.
Cap 1 did the same to me. Card is over 10 years old, but no CLI in about 7-8 years. I got the card when my credit was pretty bad. I am told that when they issue you a card when your credit was not good, they really never update your profile as your credit improves. I just stuck mine in the sock drawer and never use it.
That's interesting, actually.
Most of us get "insufficient usage of credit line" as an excuse for not granting a CLI.
I wonder where the sweet spot is?

I'm not actually suggesting you do this, as I'm not a Cap1 fan, but at this point, the only way to get a higher credit limit with them is to apply for a new card. Your current card is bucketed. You're in their "bad credit" bucket. That card will likely never go very high. I've had one since 2016, and I've managed to claw it from $401 to about $3100, but from what I've read, even that is fairly rare. Be grateful they gave you credit when your credit was poorer, and just sock drawer the card now that you're better off. That's how I've treated their card.
Another item to keep in mind, as far as Chase goes, any CLI requests are HP, not SP. There wasn't much in your op to determine your income/DTI, AAoA, or overall history, but if you just recently obtained the CSP, the $5K appears to indicate you barely made the cusp on that approval (congrats btw). Is that score a FICO or Vantage btw?
Are you using the other Chase card frequently @credit2019? You mentioned "Chase Platinum" (not sure if this was from a predecessor bank or...). Perhaps you can have it switched to a different card such as Freedom, Freedoom Unlimited or Freedom Flex depending on your spending habits.
This is true. I was told that the day your CR is drawn will determine what your card will be years from now.
If you opened the card 3 years ago and had COs and a repo, they will still gauge your credit history with that.
Wow! That must be really frustrating. CapOne's CLI rules can be very hard to figure out. I haven't heard of this particular denial reason before, so I appreciate you posting about it.
I googled the exact language of your denial reason and got a fair number of hits. If you want to play their game, you could read up on other people's experiences with it. There's one thread on here from 2017 hinting that what triggers this reason is letting a high balance report on the statement. (Seems strange they would care. What difference does it make if you PIF their card one day before your statement cuts or one day after? They can see it all, unlike your accounts with other lenders.) Have you tried heavy use with full payment before statement cut date?
But, as others have said, any CLI you get from CapOne is likely to be small. $100 has been the norm for a year or so on cards with limits under $1000. If you decide that's not worth the effort, you would be in good company.
Good luck!

Yup.
I have a QS with a decent limit, but not because of CLI's... It's because of when they used to allow card combining online. I probably opened three additional cards over the years and combined them into that QS to get the limit I have now!

I don't think there's necessarily a "sweet spot". I think it has more to do with the spend on the account. If you have a lot of spend and keep the balance relatively low, that will give them a better reason to increase the limit. I have a C1 QS and keep asking for CLIs.. I started my rebuild with them and had a secured $500 CL card with them, went through a couple other C1 cards and now I'm at $10,500 CL but they give me these silly $500 CLIs once every 6 months or so. Meanwhile I have my Amex BCP, and with 2 years of spend on the car, went from a $10k CL to $34k... *shrug*... The C1 QS will most likely end up in the good ol SD... I wish I could just get rid of it and open another card with a better limit but that would trash my AAoA.

That's the same reason I keep my QS open. Otherwise, I have *WAY* more available credit than I need and wouldn't miss it!
