So the other day I was feelin' myself and decided to pull the plug on Cap. 1 since I received approvals from others. I got a "we can't give you this card" message, but did get a suggestion to "take this card over here" message. So I did. Then I was told to just chill and we'll email you the particulars, etc. So I'm waiting for like 2 days...and BAM! Big fat DENIAL! Wait, what?!
Um, you pulled all 3 of my CRs. I got notifications left/right about that, but then I happened to notice on your denial letter that you're claiming you ONLY pulled Experian. What gives man???

DId they provide a reason for the denial? They might have pulled all three, but found something on EXP that they didn't like.
When they said "take this card over here" did they say "you are pre-approved for this one" or something along the lines of "consider one of these options/ here are some cards you can apply for"
It may be something you can bring to recon, but we would need some more details on the particulars of the application and any information you can provide on your credit file would help as well.

That is not shady. Many lenders pull two, and a few like Cap One pull all three, however every letter will cite reason codes from single CRA regardless of how many were pulled
They arent "claiming" they only pulled EX, they are simply giving you reason codes. Otherwise, you would be getting three denial letters, one for each CRA. This is common practice applicable to all lenders.

There is no recon at cap1.
OP: If my understanding is correct, it sounds like you did not pass the pre-approval tool for the card you want and was offered some others? Those recommendations aren't based on the pre-approval tool. They are offered anytime you fail the tool and the types of cards offered will vary. As for the pulls, almost all creditors will only show one bureau on the letter no matter how many they pull.

Agree with everything said by @Brian_Earl_Spilner and @Remedios. Cap One pulls all 3, and the denial letter if you read it carefully, will say the source of the denial reason they used was EX, but they're not saying it was the ONLY bureau they pulled. And the pre approval tool may have suggested something else, but that doesn't mean it was a guaranteed approval.
Also, @SDMarik, there is no recon at Cap One. Once the computer makes a decision, nobody at Cap One (even the executive office) can overwrite it.

Good to know, I was under the impression that everyone has a recon line. Thanks for dropping the forum knowledge bomb on me there

Nope. Synchrony is another large issuer that does not reconsider denials - their approval process is entirely automated and the outcome is final.
I'll also mention that while Citi will honor a reconsideration request the analyst may at their discretion choose to make another hard pull while you're on the phone. YMMV.

It appears you may be/are new to the Forums. I would recommend that you take advantage of the many data points from other contributors by checking out the "Credit Card Approvals" thread and search for the bank you're considering before applying for something in the future. There's a lot of valuable data there, giving you a heads up on Cap1 application processes etc.

Well, there's no recon for that level either if you don't achieve it or get 'bucketed' in Super Contributor 😂
It doesn't sound like Cap1 did anything wrong, though it's unfortunate how it unfolded.
I wouldn't really recommend Cap1 in general unless somebody had a reason they wanted a specific Cap1 card, because of the triple-pull. They do have a nice web site, good app, and great marketing, though.
