Never had a Chase Amazon (I have other Chase cards) so wanted to get the SUB and just use it for Amazon purchase. Ive been at 4/24 for 5 months and did add 2 new cards recently. One was added 14 days ago but has not yet hit the CBs.
income is around $94K, combined total available credit is $200k. Fico on TU, EX, and EQ are 790-810 (Equifax the highest) total CC debt about $700 right now. No baddies, no lates.
that being said I was confident that it would be a 100% approval. Low and behold a decline.
Called early this morning and was confident that it would be overturned, I was wrong on that.
spoke with a gentleman who looked again at my CRs. They pulled Eq and EX. The decline was for the following 2 reasons.
1. Too many recent inquiries
2. Too many recently opened accounts, but they didn't say it was because too many opened in 24 months.
so yes, I did have 3 inquiries in about the last 3 months. I was under the impression that Chase was never concerned about inquiries but this time I guess they were.
For accounts, I did have 2 new accounts in the past couple months and the new account has not hit. The analyst said that the application process can often detect if a card might be approved but hasn't hit the system yet. Now when the new card does hit, I will be 5/24. When I told him I'm under 5/24 he said "I have no clue of what you are talking about". I know he knew full well what I was talking about but arguing wasn't going to get my approved. He did say they can consider recent new activity as a reason for denial.
I then played dumb and asked about "don't you have a 5/24 rule?" He said we have underwriting guidelines for approvals that we are not allowed to discuss with the public. So even under (technically) 5/24 and a small amount of inquiries I was declined.
I guess I was overconfident with seeing people approved recently over 5/24 and I'm under 5/24 and was still declined.
he was polite but firm and unbending and told me I could not recon anymore but should contact Equifax/Experian if I felt the recent new accounts and inquiries were wrong.
for this approved over 5/24, that's great but lesson learned today, you can still be under that number and get declined. Oh well
Well, that is interesting. I never paid much attention to my Chase at the moment because of me building up history. I had the student and transferred to flex and mine is stuck at 1.2k CL. Haven't gotten an auto CLI and am not about to ask because I know that I am well over 5/24 for it. So far of the card's life, I have put $4.8k spending.
As for Amazon card are you just solely wanting the 5% CB from amazon? If so, I have heard about Affinity FCU giving off a 5% CB yearly + rotating categories. Maybe trying looking them up. I have read about Affinity FCU from another thread because someone was mad (I think at Chase) and a datapoint came by on the replies stating that Affinity does have a card that offers it (+ getting 7%/10% rotating categories as what DPs have said).

Hi.
just wanted the Amazon Prime for giggles I guess. Honestly have a plethora of CCs so thought I would add this with no problem. Well, they said otherwise.
Chase is really wanting very few inquries and new accounts. My Chase accounts are decades old. I would never ask for a CLI from them as it would be denied due to too many inquries and new accounts. My most recent Chase card came from WAMU went they where taken over by Chase. That was about 12 years ago and I was with WAMU for about 7 years prior to that. The purpose of coming on here is to learn as much as you can before you apply. With Chase it is just not worth the hard pull unless you have basically nothing going on in the last few years.
Thanks
Mark
Bummer, sorry for the denial.

The good news is that at least you weren't approved and then BAM, the rug pulled out from under you when the other new account hit your CR. Chase most certainly would have closed their CC.
Sorry they did that with what looks like a reasonable enough profile for a Amazon Approval.
In my honest humble opinion Amazon Inc loses massive amounts of business profits due to 2 really bad poor decisions. And that is letting Chase and Synchrony handle their retail branded cards with such stringent restraints they use now.
Of course Amazon is just so filthy rich it doesn't matter anymore to them. They sold cheap imports for enough years already their settled for life. Their in prime position one day to just sell off their company and really rake it in.
Doesnt take a rocket scientist to see it for what it is. Just sorry Chase can be so sublime to you due to their own tight constrictions.
Thanks Mark
Yes I have read that as well. Not to be smug, but I have applied and approved for nearly 99% of the cards I want so I thought I'd be a shoo-in for this. But looking back, maybe it's best not to have it
