Re: Chase Freedom Denied Because of Chargeoff

Hate to be negative, but i guess ill share my experience with you.

I had a $2k charge off in 2006, paid it off immediately shorty after i the harrasment started.

Charge off fell off, leaving a 90day late derog from a cap one account.

Fast forward to 2013, i apped to chase freedom, got denied. "Not enough paid as agreed lines, and a derogatory account." And they mentioned the charge of during recon.

2014

I apped for chace freedom 2 more times each app almost 6 months apart. Each time the charge off was brought up as one of the reasons for my denial.

I tried to call recon many times and was denied each time, Convo always ended with something along the lines of "Because we are seeing a charge off and your new accounts we cant offer you anything right now."

Chase has a blacklist, and they are very unforgiving in some cases.

I had no idea at 19 years old a charge off would ruin my chances of getting another chase card.

CSP is my dream card, but it seems like ill never get it, atleast not for a very very long time. Charge offs with chase seem to last a long time in their memory. And there is definitely a blacklist for some individuals.

Did Chase even acknowledge that the charge off was paid.

Re: Chase Freedom Denied Because of Chargeoff

I'm sure you will get back in. I had a CO with Chase in 2007. Finally got back in last year with both a Slate and Freedom. I had a pre-qual on the Freedom when approved insta for $4500. I was denied the 6 weeks before and couldn't recon and also no pre-qual.

Re: Chase Freedom Denied Because of Chargeoff

I may have been one of the lucky ones but with a score of 560 across the board with 1 charge off from discover (which had been paid off) got approved for a Freedom with a CL of 1,200 so it seems very random with chase.

Re: Chase Freedom Denied Because of Chargeoff

I'd let you have my Chase accounts if it was permitted.  I've never had a very good relationship with them, and as soon as my one Rewards card is paid down, I'm dumping them completely.

Re: Chase Freedom Denied Because of Chargeoff

Thanks everyone. I think I just need to wait. I'm not going to bother with the Freedom card, the one I really want is the United card anyway, especially since I might soon be traveling in May with United and/or Star Alliance (where I can transfer miles to). I now have a nice Capital One Spark Miles card I just converted from Spark Cash Select with almost 70,000 miles earned already... problem is I have to pay for travel entirely with miles. If I don't have enough, I can't pay the rest in cash, and I can't use those miles for upgrades. I wouldn't mind the option of paying for a coach ticket and getting a free upgrade to first class with miles, which it seems only an airline card will do.

I think around April I should be all set. My score isn't that terrible, neither is my recent history (last 2 years or so), and the only thing it seems is holding me back from decent cards is the fact that I got my most recent card in mid-December. So now I wait!

Re: Chase Freedom Denied Because of Chargeoff

Wow.  Chase always gave me that speech up front about nothing but perfection on your report or an instant denial.  Scared me away many times.  I waited until everything they ask was a "yes" answer.  Smiley Surprised

Re: Chase Freedom Denied Because of Chargeoff

OP - Maybe focus on lenders who only pull TU or EX, since the derog is only on EQ?

Just a thought.

Thanks. Yeah, I've been aiming for AMEX since they seem to only pull EX, but they won't approve me yet. I think my only real problem right now is that my accounts are too recent. My latest was in December, and most of them are from around August 2014. My oldest open card is from mid-2013, though I do have about a 6 year history total with some older acounts including car and student loans. My EX looks pretty good, the only recent problem is a single 120-day late from my student loans in December 2013 due to a misunderstanding that I'm working to have fixed. Everything from a year on has been better than perfect... I PIF often and carry small balances, but this has only been in the last couple of months, so I think it's just a matter of waiting a bit longer, maybe another two or three months before applying for AMEX. I think I'll get approved for something before this summer. I'm aiming for the business gold charge card and maybe Delta, but I prefer United with Chase, so we'll see.

Also at least Capital One and Synchrony like me: I've gone from $4,300 across five cards with them to $10,800 on those same cards, so at least Capital One is seeing my good behavior and rewarding me for it. Synchrony upped my $300 Banana Republic card to $1,000 just a few days ago at right around 3 months after opening the card. I was surprised, as I though it might go up to maybe only $500 or something in such a short time.

I'm excited for how things are going. I'm dying for a proper airline card, but considering I've gone from a single $300 Capital One Platinum starter card in mid-2013 to seven cards, all of them being pretty nice ones (though one is a Spark Miles Visa Signature, so that's a real nice one) with almost $12,000 in combined CL today, I really can't complain.

Re: Chase Freedom Denied Because of Chargeoff

Hey there,

I just posted this in another thread I have, but thought others might be interested in this particular story.

I applied for a Chase Freedom card today and got declined. I had a 641 when they pulled EQ, which was a little surprising because I figured that was acceptable for the Freedom card. Anyway, I called the recon line and spoke to a nice lady who basically suggested that a chargeoff I have on my file is what's keeping them from approving me. So I basically recapped with her and said "so if I pay the chargeoff, everything else looks ok?" and she basically said yes... or at least as close to yes as she can without getting in trouble.

So today I called up the credit union I had the open chargeoff for (which is like 4 years old now but anyway) and asked if they can offer a pay-for-delete, but she insisted they couldn't. So I paid it anyway with a credit card by phone and she said within a week or so it should be reflected in my file. The chargeoff was reported only on Equifax, and Chase (who checks EQ for me) is the only one who has given me trouble about the chargeoff... so I think once that's updated I should be able to get my foot in the door with Chase. I want the Freedom card just to have it, and maybe upgrade to something else later, like the United card or something.

Anyway, besides some bad history about 2 or 3 years ago, the chargeoff is the only unpaid baddie I had, and I just decided to pay it. Anyone with personal experience like this, and what the outcome was after taking care of the chargeoff?

Thanks!

Hey Cave....

I had a similar experience when I aped for CSP recently and when my wife aped for freedom. They are quite keen on baddies :/ and justifiably so. I called em up twice and each time they replied the same way. They want to "see that taken care of". For my wife we even wrote to the EO and they said they'd have to do another pull, which we dont want, at least not now! I understand from both individuals I spoke with that the score is not the determining factor, its everything in the background, ie baddies, new accounts, balances on other accounts and the like! Even though you've paid it (as I did) you'll want to wait until it reflects on your CR before you ap again. I even tried to argue that I had just been approved for a 10k limit and the response was "well, we dont see it on your credit file" (It was 3 days prior to the ap). I wish all banks were like Barclay. When I applied for them the next day it was updated on Experian and a few days for the other two!
