Decided to app for a Chase Freedom yesterday right when my student Discover It turned a year old. Chase is a bank that I really want to start building a relationship with so I figured, now or never for applying since I have income coming in from a summer job.
My stats
Credit scores: EX: 727 FICO 8 (via free Experian account), TU: 738 FICO 8 (via Discover)
Income is just over $9000 for the year (pre tax).
Application process
Went online on the application page, filled everything out, listed my real income - most importantly this is verifiable by paystubs, coincidentally my 2nd paycheck/pay stub for the summer got to me yesterday when I applied as well.
Filled everything out... denied with the following message.
Thank you for your request. Unfortunately, we are unable to approve your application. We will provide you more detailed information in 7-10 days that explains the reasons for this decision.
Ok, denied. Called up the recon line at 888-270-2127, pressed 0 to get transferred to a rep. (I took a screenshot of the webpage, still haven't gotten an email about anything.)
Recon
Recon did some quick identity verification stuff and then said there was a letter in the mail coming to me. The rep I got on recon was super nice and she placed me on a brief hold while she pulled the letter up. She explained right on the call that they were requesting income verification and said that sending in my most recent 2 pay stubs along with my application reference number was what they were looking for, for proof of income. I asked her how to send this in and she said to do it via mail or fax. She was able to give me my application reference number and their fax number (888-643-9628) so I could get the income verification going. Faxed them my pay stubs and waited.
Robo Application Status
Few hours later I went online looking for anyone else going through Chase income verification. One of the tips was to call the robo application status line 800-436-7927 and check the message there. (For reference the sequence of button presses to get to the status is #, 3, 1, SSN after it asks for a credit card number.) That line told me it was under review, 7-10 days to wait. Maybe a good sign for an approval based on what people have said online.
Time frame
Today I called back into recon because I realized yesterday I didn't ask the rep for the time frame it would take for the verification department to review my pay stubs. The rep I got pulled up my file and I explained that I faxed in my docs per call yesterday. This rep was also helpful and she explained it would be 1-2 weeks for them to look over the docs and make a decision.
Hopefully my application ultimately gets approved, even with a low limit that's fine, just want to boost my utilization and start building a relationship with Chase. I don't make up income numbers so hopefully verification sees my pay stubs and pushes the approval on through. I'm hopeful this will be the start of my relationship with Chase, just wanted to get this info out for anyone going through similar processes just as a data point.
@Anonymous you should be fine
Income verification for student card is not unusual, so just keep checking automated system
As long as they acknowledged your documents have been received, there is nothing to do but wait
I hope to see an approval thread from you
Good luck on the app! 👍🏻

Freedom is not a student card, I'm just saying, I am a student. Chase should hopefully recognize that, since the pay stubs I sent them are around 1/3rd of the income I reported, that I'm working a summer job.
Unsure how to quote multiple posts for one reply so I'll just say it here, thank you Remedios and @blindambition - hope I get to post on the approval board soon!

You're slipping, sir 😐
@Anonymous
Fingers crossed for you and I hope you get approved! Good Luck!
Update with more data points.
Called verification yesterday 888-688-6708 just to make sure they received my documents (I didn't really trust the internet fax service I used to send them in). The person confirmed they were the verification line, had me wait a bit... then transferred me to Chase Lending Services. Researched it a little and hung up (don't want any extra scrutiny) and took it as a sign they got my income verification fax.
This morning I called the automated line again and robo lady changed my message. Previously it was the 7-10 days message (verification I assume), now it is 2 weeks. That seems like a good sign from other DP's, hopefully it is just in a queue to get approved.
Good luck, thanks for the update.
