I was denied for a Marriott Bonvoy Boundless card due to what sounds like the 5/24 rule. It listed something about an issue with a university instalment loan - so basically they needed any reason to deny me, and came up with not liking that I have several 40,000 student loan items in the credit report.
So my question is this: if I call the Recon line, can an employee there decide to manually accept my application by overriding the 5/24 rule, which apparently isn't even internally codified anywhere? Or is it more of something that's cemented by the top? Last question: is there any way for me to immediately pay the $95 annual fee so that the employee knows that I'm not just trying to get the news cardholder benefits/ can they basically reverse freeze the card insofar that I wouldn't be able to close it if that would be Chase's concern? Thanks for your help!
@Anonymous Sadly no. If you were denied due to 5/24 then no one can override that. You can call and ask for a recon and see what it yeilds.

Actually, it depends.
Under some circumstances an underwriter can choose on recon to discount a particular event as counting toward 5/24. Probably the best-known example is when an applicant had been added as an AU to an account within the last 24 months.
There's already a sunk cost made by applying anyway and there really isn't much more to lose by attempting a recon.

Hi @Anonymous - welcome to the forums.
Technically, no.
The analyst themselves would not be able to override the decision. So, if there is a presence of opening 5 (or more) revolving accounts, then the reconsideration approach won't work -- algorithms are the deciding engine for most UW decisions and yes it's an internal criteria.
With that said, if for any reason you were added as an AU which would've flagged your credit profile, then that's easily explainable and the analyst can have the application re-evaluated.
The 5/24 rule is dumb IMO, but I don't make the rules. From what I know from personal experience and mostly from what I have read, if the computer denies the application due to 5/24 than an agent can't/won't/will not override that.
there is numerous posts about people being approved over 5/24. Its more rare than it is common but it can happen.
it seems Chase can override a charge off, late payment or DTI denials easier than 5/24.
Unless you have a reason for appearing over 5/24 but not technically being over, such as an AU situation, no. They cannot/will not override your denial.

(These two reasons have nothing to do with one another. The former refers to open revolving accounts in a 24 month period while the latter refers to an installment loan issue)

Thanks for your help! (If you were denied for being over 5/24, then it would have clearly stated it. Doesn't appear that that was the reason for your denial. The decision of approval or denial will now rest with the underwriter. There have been data points of people being approved being over 5/24 unsure how and why. It is advised to not poke to the Chase bear. As there have been data points of people having accounts shut down after the fact. Re: annual fee. Negative. Once approved, you can prepay your card but that's after the card shows up in the app)

5/24 has nothing to do with loans, it's only about revolving accounts.
My wife tried to get them to override the rule for a Freedom classic card because she was over with AU accounts with no luck, but it can't hurt

When I got denied for being over 5 24, the reason was something like "too many recent accounts" or "number of recent accounts". Chase does not need an excuse to deny you, and your denial may have nothing to do with 5 24. If you havn't already, call Chase and try recon.
