So I applied for both the Chase Southwest card and the Chase Marriott card the other day. Because of a fraud alert on my credit reports, I had to call in to get the ball rolling on the processing. Both were declined for two reasons: a Chase charge off from a few years back and too many accounts with a balance.
I tried to recon the decision, and judging by his response my explanation of the charge off seemed to be sufficient, but this particular representtative was stuck on the "too many accounts with balances" reason. Would it be worth a second attempt at recon? If so, when should I make that second call (made the first one today)?
I've aggressively driven by utilization down to 29%, so we're talking small balances on these accounts. Do you think a second attempt would work?
Thanks in advance, everyone!

Impossible to know whether a 2nd attempt will work. Sometimes it happens, most often not. But I do know this, you have nothing to lose. Also I wouldnt be completely sure that your explanation for the charge off was 'accepted'. Chase holds a grudge a long time. Realistically even if they approve you, it would be for only 1 card, so focus on the one you want the most. Give it a try and let us know the results. Good luck.
Chase isn't one that lets you kick them in the nuts and will still be your friend.

I can't really knock them for that. In this instance I paid as much as I could in a settlement without affecting my ability to pay my rent/utilities/groceries at the time. I suppose I'm hoping for some leniency since I've banked with them for a decade now.

How long do you think I should give it before I try another recon call?
And you're right -- the explanation might not have worked, but he did drop all mention of it when discussing why he couldn't put it through for approval afterwards. Perhaps I'm just reading into that too much.

They may or may not overlook that. Did you pay the settlement in full?

They will be lenient but your profile has to be a bit solid. If those are your current scores in your siggy then I'd wait for scores to be at least in the 700s before trying again. Because as of now you have alot against you thus, Chase's internal score and your credit profile.
Hang in there..

If you're goingt to do a 2nd recon, do it now as there is no need to wait. I had to do 3 for my Ritz card (same thing, past problems with Chase but that was from 1993) and I did them one after another before finally getting approved.
did you pay back the CO?
