After applying for a bunch of cards over the past six months my wife just applied for the Freedom. Got the initial 7-10 message and then received a letter in the mail saying "too many accounts opened in the past two years". She had opened 4 Chase cards this year - CSP, Marriott, United, and BA.
FICO scores in the mid-700's, util < 10%, a couple of derogs with the latest from 2011.
It would certainly seem that 4 is the magic number. Has anyone been able to exceed that number? I am looking to apply for CSP myself but already did my 4 - IHG, Marriott, United, IHG.

Yes, Amazon in November, PC to Freedom shortly after. United in December, Marriott in January, closed United in March when approved for CSP, April I got AARP and then late May approved for IHG. I don't know when this new policy started but I'm thankful I haven't had to recon the last two cards or I probably wouldn't have them.

It's not the number of new Chase accounts that matter. It's the number of all new accounts. The denial reason for your wife is referring to that, not the Chase accounts
And even ^^ that is subjective because I have overall 8 new accounts this year alone. I think Chase is using that as an excuse depending on the profile maybe? I started my credit journey January 2014 and if anyone is a candidate for a denial based on new accounts, it's this girl lol.

I think you hit it. Perhaps 11 new accounts in 5 months may have spooked them. I was thinking of Chase cards only.

That's my thought. When I reconned my Freedom denial on 5.31 the analyst didn't even mention new accounts in the last two years, and I have seven.

Thanks for the clarification, Irish. It is new accounts, not just new Chase Accounts.

I have 20+ since Jan. 2014 and have been approved for 7 Chase cards since November 2014. So....shrug.

Just to be clear the only Chase cards that are of concern are the non co branded ones; CSP, Freedom and Slate. This new policy that everyone is talking about only recently started. Did you get any of those 3 within the last month or so?

Yes, CSP.
