Citi CLI Denied for Inquiries

The other day, or last week, or whenever. (When I get approved for something, I post that immediately. When I get denied . . . maybe I'll get around to mentioning it eventually, lol.)

When I applied too soon after my last CLI, they gave me a specific date when I'd be eligible. I tried on that date and was turned down.

"At this time, we're unable to approve this request because your credit report shows too many recent inquiries."

"Please note, our decision was based in whole or in part on information in a report from the following consumer reporting agency:
Equifax Credit Information Services"

I'm 2/12 on Eq, 1/12 on TU, and 2/12 on Ex.

I don't know if the 2 on Eq were too many, or if they looked at all of those and saw 5.

I don't know my x/24 numbers, but the previous 12 months were probably similar to this past 12 months. I know inquiries are visible on reports for 2 years even though they only affect the score for 1 year.

I've been putting $300-$500 per month on the Custom Cash in one category to get the 5% back. Maybe $20 outside of that, early in the month, because I changed my mind about which category I'm using the card for that month.

Re: Citi CLI Denied for Inquiries

Sorry to hear about your denial, but thank you for sharing your experience with us.  For me I usually get denied for the too many inquiries or too many new accounts reasons if I am 2/6 or higher. The only time I got a Citi Custom Cash limit increase was when I was 0/6 on new accounts and inquiries. I don't know if 1/6 is acceptable because I've not yet asked when I have been 1/6.  Hopefully you can ask again soon and get the increase approved!

I became 1/6 new accounts on Sunday. I was 2/6 last week when I applied.

I got my first and only CLI from Citi in March, when I was 1/6 new accounts.

I looked up my post from that earlier CLI. Seems I was 1/6 new accounts but 2/12 inquiries then also.

I thought my Custom Cash limit was a little low compared to my other cards when I first opened it in July of last year. Then I noticed the pattern of their SLs and decided it was not too bad for Citi. But I still didn't like it being the lowest limit of my "new" cards.

I've pestered the increase request button several times a month for quite some time now. They kept telling my I had too many recent inquiries. (I hoped they weren't counting all my SP CLI requests on their website against me Smiley Indifferent )

Finally tonight I got a "Congratulations . . . $10,900"

A $4k increase Smiley Happy

I don't see how my inquiries passed any sort of threshold. Equifax has 2/12. One in July was for the Custom Cash I'm talking about here. The other was a HP CLI from PenFed in August. I've heard they're inquiry sensitive, but I thought that was pretty good.

EQ8 is 769. It hasn't changed more than a few points in months.

Utilization on that card stays around 25% because I'm still in the 0 interest period and using that float. Aggregate utilization is 8%.

Re: Citi CLI Denied for Inquiries

On November 1, I'll be 0/6 new accounts and [just checked] on November 3, I'll be 0/6 inquiries on Eq.

I'll probably try again next month Smiley Happy

@mgood  Thank you for sharing this data point with us! It is helpful and nice to see an approval at 1/6 new accounts and with 2 inquiries!
