So I have had the Best Buy Visa card, as well as the Best Buy Store Card for over 14 years. In 14 years I've never missed a payment. Also I've never gotten a limit increase on either when I've asked. In late 2017 into early 2018 I hit a rough patch. As a result I missed payments on my student loans, it got up to 120 days unfortunately. Since April 2018 I've made all my payments on time. However anytime I ask Citi for a limit increase the denial reason is you were recently past due referring to my student loans. The last time I asked was November 2020. Since it is a hard pull each time I'm nervous to try again since the missed payments haven't dropped off and won't drop off my credit report until about March 2025.
I was curious if perhaps me being approved for another Citi issued card such as the Citi Custom Cash would be beneficial in proving myself to Citi even more. I'm hoping that if they see me use another card issued by them responsibly maybe they won't make me wait another 3 years for an increase on the Best Buy Visa. I don't really need the Custom Cash. I just really want an increase on my Best Buy card since I have a lot of large purchases to make there and the $1000 limit and $2700 limits are sometimes limiting on me making purchases especially when it is close to my statement dates. $10,000 would be my desired amount. I don't need the Citi Custom Cash, but do y'all think it would help me get Citi to be willing to increase my Best Buy Visa before the missed student loan payments are removed?
The short answer, unlikely.
For one, we don't know whether you may be approved for Citi's Custom Cash. But, let's say or assume that you are approved, it may not make much of a difference. Citi legacy cards have different UW criteria than those of Citi Retail CCs, such as the Best Buy CC. They do not cross-impact the other unless accounts become delinquent with either entity or when it comes to overall exposure, for example. In other words, having Custom Cash will not influence their algorithms to yield a CLI on the Best Buy Visa. Is there any great benefit on having both the Best Buy Visa and the store version in your case?
Since you mentioned that you don't need it, why shorten your AAoA when there's no guarantee it will work plus you'll have to manage an extra account? 🤷♂️

@FinStar thank you for this very informative response. I appreciate it.
As far as having both versions of the Best Buy card, 14 years ago back when I applied for the Best Buy card I was trying to purchase a tv that cost $3000. I applied in a store at customer service, hoping to use their special 0% financing option on the tv. I applied for the My Best Buy Visa card (back then it was issued by HSBC and I believe it was actually a MasterCard) and was approved with a limit of $1000. I told the customer service rep, that won't work, the TV I want is $3000. They recommended I apply again for the Store version of the card. I did and was instantly approved for $2700. Since Best Buy was my favorite store I kept both cards open. It was nice to have the Visa version since I could use it outside of Best Buy.

Why gamble with a hard inquiry? App for another card with a soft pull preapproval if you want another card.

I'm pretty sure it was HSBC. The same scenario happened to me back in 2007. Got both cards to get a laptop.

1. There's no need for you to incur a hard pull when applying for a CLI with Citi; the site tells you if it will be a hard pull or a soft pull. If it says hard pull, don't do it.
2. No you shouldn't apply for the Custom Cash, because (a) in general you should never apply for something you don't need (b) it isn't likely to help with your Best Buy credit limit problem, and (c) if they're turning you down for CLI's they'll probably turn you down for the Custom Cash too.
3. You could overpay your Best Buy cards a little, which will probably give you a little breathing room on the credit limits.
4. You could use other cards to make some of your Best Buy purchases.
5. My advice is to just chill out on this, and make CLI requests when you can do it on a soft pull. I believe it will eventually work out.

@increasingmyfico regarding your question, "Why gamble with a hard inquiry?", wasn't sure if you meant to get the Citi Custom Cash or to get the limit increase on the Best Buy. If by chance you're referring to the Best Buy Card I need a higher limit on that card and the only way to get a limit increase is to get a hard inquiry. I don't need another card right now. I only have 1 more goal card, the Chase Ink Cash, but I won't be under 5/24 until later this year.

@increasingmyfico yep, I'm 100% sure it was a HSBC, just was questioning if the card was a Visa or not. I feel like it was initially a Mastercard.

@SouthJamaica thank you for all the tips and suggestions. It is definitely a hard pull to get limit increases on the Best Buy cards issued by Citi. I've gotten hard pulls any time I've tried to get an increase over the cards' 14 year history. I try to space out my requests at least a year or 2 apart. I last asked for one in November 2020. I think I will continue to wait to ask. Like you mentioned I can use other cards there instead, but I'll miss out on the 5% back that I usually get using those cards at Best Buy. I try not to abuse buying gift cards but maybe I can use some of my cards that give 5% and 6% back to get some Best Buy gift cards every now and then. Thanks again!
