My current CLI is $25K and requested $35K - I was not hit for the IRS but it wanted me to upload bank documents, and i clicked canceled and then I received an email -
We’ve received your request regarding your Credit Limit increase for the account referenced above. We need some additional information to proceed with our review.
Here’s what we need
If you haven’t already, please provide the three most recent bank statements from your primary bank account(s).
Here’s how to send them
Simply log into your American Express® account* online to choose an option to provide them. You can:
· Give us one-time digital access to your bank account(s) or
· Upload PDF statements downloaded directly from your bank account(s).
* If you don’t have an American Express online account, you can easily set one up by navigating to the American Express website here and selecting "Create New Online Account".
Here’s something to keep in mind
You’ll need to provide us this information by August 23, 2023. If we don’t receive it by then, we may close your request.
So here is my question.
Do I have to submit or can I just let it expire ?
Will they CLOSE my account if I do not send my bank statements ?
Thank you All
It's optional, but you probably won't be approved for the CLI otherwise
You can let the request expire
Agree whole heartily with @GZG...
There was a thread in the business section about this very same thing the other day, as far as the request for bank statements... they ultimately submitted the statements and got an instant approval... not a big deal if you decline or allow the request to expire. They'll likely request them again if you make another request in the future, much the same way they might ask for paystubs or other POI to further assess whether or not they want to expand their exposure with you.
My dilemma is I have more than 1 account where my direct deposit gets split. I literally have bank accounts for Mortage, car payment etc and those account is setup for auto draft - I know I am weird. So the main account I give them will not show my full income - also my 401K and other benefits and etc.
I just don't see how a bank statement can prove PRoof of income when income is Gross on the application and bank statement is NET.
I just want to submit my banking info and open a Pandora's box.

Got hit by this as well a month or so ago. I just ignored. I also have direct deposit going into multiple accounts. Not sure what bank statements show maybe other than you have say 5-10k in checking and somthing in savings and they might feel a bit more likely to provide said increase. This is coming a lot more common for AMEX so more dp's should be coming w/regards to this. Honestly I would prefer a tax transcipt than bank statements lol. I will likely provide it to them when I request it again, but my thought was instead of me just asking for 5k I was going to ask for actually 3x that card limit and see where the chips fall. I have a decent amount of exposure with Amex now around 80kish mainly all on business cards but was asking on personal gold card that only has an 8k limit although with that said after I pay one AF after a year I will not be keeping that card for for 2 years as have a business delta platinum i just had that one for sub.

1. If you don't follow through, they won't do anything. Of course your CLI request will time out.
2. If you split the deposits 3 ways you can send the statements from the 3 accounts, but maybe it's not worth it to collect 9 bank statements for a crummy CLI.
You can let the request expire without worrying about adverse action, etc. I've let requests expire, put more spend on the card afterwards and have gotten an auto-cli as well as been able to request myself again without the bank statements being requested. Your spending patterns and profile at the time can make the algorithm change. If you're comfortable sharing the statements, go ahead and they'll approve what the see appropriate. Alternatively, if you feel the request to be intrusive, you can increase card usage/ spend and see if the algorithm is more favorable.

I can say that's not always the case. I got a request for bank account verification for my very first CLI with AMEX, left it alone and eventually even got a phone call. I told the nice lady I was no longer interested in a CLI and she cleared it from their system. Two months or so later I requested another and got it. I have since gotten another card and another CLI without any further POI/document/etc. request.
Yeah AMEX can be a bit strange.
I had a $1k Delta Gold from 2014-2016... paid and closed shortly before filing Ch 13.
I was approved for the same card with a $10k limit in early 2022... and for the last 16 months I have been unable to get a CLI. I get the same "your credit report reflects a bankruptcy."
Will see if I get one when the PR falls off in a few months.
