I am thinking of finally getting a credit card after 2 years without one for travel reasons.
I had United Explorer previously with a $40k limit. Chase closed it after I missed to scheduled payments (NOT auto payments, but payments made in addition to scheduled payments) during 2020, even though again I paid the auto payments and was under the limit. Their response wasn't really coherent at the time and I chalked it up to bank fears during pandemic. I paid it off shortly thereafter.
I don't have great credit (bank card score 8 with middle score 691 - I have some missed with student loan payments (like 3 and are falling off record now) that have been on autopay for like a decade). But I'm high earner $350k+ annually with retirement savings and such. Like I said student loans and I pay part of a mortgage that is like $1700 (although im not listed) (so like $850 monthly).
any recommendations? I'd like something to about $5k.

To clarify, you currently do not have any open revolving accounts, is that correct ? You could maybe start with your existing bank or CU if they have credit cards that could meet your needs.
That is correct - no other revolving credit.

If that's the case, it may be tough to get approved with a decent limit. Your income is high, which will be a positive factor, and you do have closed revolving accounts on your reports so that's good also.
Honestly it's going to be tough to predict your success, worst case is you might have to open a secured CC initially until you build up enough recent history.
You stated that you are not named on the mortgage which I will assume that your Spouse is. Given that, does your Spouse have any cards (so that you can be added as an AU) ?

I would try for the Amex Blue Cash Everyday.

Yeap, likely worst case is a $1k-2k starting limit, but grows very quickly.

does the Amex Platinium help you?
do the math on the credits and the access and see if might be what you're looking for
student loan history might be more than enough to get that tbh
Got the AmEx platinum
