If you're new to Amex, or were approved with a very low limit, I think it's best to wait 61 days or more before trying that way there is time for them to see your spending and payment patterns.
No problem telling people to wait to apply for the CLI but I really wish people would stop using 61 days as some meaningful waiting period because it still gives people the impression that the 61 day 'rule' is in effect. It has no meaning any longer and as soon as that 'term' disappears from use, people, especially new posters, will not be ill informed about Amex CLIs. 61 days is not used for any other creditor and it no longer needs to be used with Amex. End of rant

I hear what your saying. The reason so many of us have 61 days stuck in our heads is because there was so much talk about it for so long, it's hard to break the habit. Anytime we research Amex CLIs, 61 days is what will pop up the most - it takes time to break old habits. I remember reading an article years ago that said we shouldn't ask for a CLI from any lender until at least 6 months since being approved had passed, and that has always stuck in my head. While that is great advice, I think waiting at least 90 days is sufficient too. Anything less than that I think is pushing it. But that's just my opinion.

Understandable. Like I said no problem telling people to wait if their credit file indicates they need to do so. Others however can apply right away. You're right though, it is hard to break old habits. The biggest reason it needs to be removed from use is because far too many posters thought that 3X CLI was somehow guaranteed after 61 days. Now if we treat it like other CLIs people will realize that any approval is based on their file and not some random number of days

Does a new account count as cli?
No, not that I'm aware of.

No. a new account is just that, a new account. it could not be increase because nothing was there to begin with. So as stated. and i don't know where the extra 1 day comes from some times.
Its 180 days between clis. Example. if you got a cli on january 1st. Your next cli would be eligible. July 1st. but if you got 3 new amex cards in between that time frame. no matter what your next cli would still be on the date of july 1st. its not based on the card per say but your membership with amex. its across all cards period. but if denied cli. the wait is 90 days. at least for cli. you could still apply for another card in that time and be approved. But that is completely a different tradeline.
