So this past February I was denied a Discvover IT due to issue with Discover over 20 years ago with an 810 Fico.
I am 41 years old and when I was 20 I applied for a Discover at UMASS-Amherst in 1995. I got a $1K credit limit and immediately blew it up and defaulted. Never in collections though. Just bad enough for them to close account. I paid it off after I got a real job in a few years.
Fast forward to the present and 17 years of flawless credit with no late payments and low balances, I applied for a Discover IT and was denied.
Reason?: Past account delinquencies.
Moral of the story? Discover remembers
You should definitely try to recon that.. Discover's automated system may have just flagged and denied it, but if you request a manual reconsideration they should be able to see that mistake was >20 years ago and you've obviously rebouned since. 800+ FICO is no joke and they're foolish to let that slip through over a 20-year-old $1k default.
If you decide to recon please let us know how it goes! Discover customer service has always been incredibly friendly to me so I'd say it's worth a try!
I would second the opinion to try recon with Discover.
Discover remembers but they also forgive. I IIB'd Discover in BK7 back in 2005. My BK7 fell off my reports in 2015 and Discover allowed back in with regular CLI's every 90 days.
Best of luck!
Good luck with the mortgage! Btw if you decide to call Discover for reconsideration they should be able to use the existing hard pull and shouldn't pull you again. So if you're concerned about an additional inquiry you should be in the clear, assuming you call within 14-30 days of the denial. I feel you'd be approved given your FICO and the fact that the default was 20 years ago, so there's nothing to lose if you want to give it a shot-- if not, you know your situation! Best of luck with whatever you choose to do!
Credit card companies are dying to get people like you. Their system screwed-up. Call them and I bet they give you a $20k limit within minutes. Let us know.
Yeah I would call for sure, bypass the computer. You already took the hard pull. There's probably a big limit waiting for you. Chalk this one up to computer issue and let it slide, they are worth it.
