I had always read that you need to have a CLI available for a combination too, is this now incorrect info?
@SouthJamaica wrote:Well @AverageJoesCredit , your theory about 2nd Discover cards seems to be completely validated from my experience.
1. My first Discover IT card was opened 4 1/2 years ago with a $1k starting limit, and almost always the only CLI I could get was what you dubbed the "SJ Special"... $300. Seemed like I was in a bucket.
2. Against my better judgment, but in pursuit of checking out your theory that a second card might not wind up in the same bucket as the first card, I opened a second Discover IT card 7 months ago.
3. Sure enough, I got 2 CLI's for $500 -- a step above the SJ Special.
4. And then today, a mere 36 days from my last $500 CLI, I got a CLI for..... $1500.
And for the record, my last CLI for Card #1 was... you guessed it... $300.
It's not really a theory because Discover packages accounts into Asset Backed Securities just like Cap1. They most definitely bucket, just not as bad as cap1.

I tried to combine before having a CLI available and I was told no.
I waited until there was a CLI available in the new card and was able to combine and closed the bucketed Discover.

I would probably end up getting a $500 limit though which would be pointless for a 0% card so I am going to pass. I have a $12,700 card with $18K income, I would say I have a pretty good chance of a low limit.
The APR is 2% less than what my current one is going to at the end of this month though and it’s nice to be wanted so there’s that! 🤣
Why not ask for an APR reduction instead?

Well I plan to do that too but I’m holding off until I have use for a 0% financing offer. I would rather have 0% for 12 months come January when my BBVA 0% ends than have a permanent APR reduction which is kind of moot next to my NFCU Platinum and it’s 8.24% with the same $12,700 limit.
I was just remarking that the APR is lower, it’s not really of any consequence to me but my theory is that lower APR would have a better chance of a usable SL even with my current exposure since lower APRs generally mean they find you less risky.
3% with my spend would likely only amount to an extra $100 for the match though, possibly even less since I do so much spending on Amazon, so I will keep the fact they will give me another card in my back pocket but look for other card options that have $100 or better SUB available.

Ive tried the ol " Can i have a APR redux" Game and all i got was a lousy tshirt that read " Here , take 12 mos 0% instead"
I wouldn’t mind that. I plan to ask in January.
