Discover It Chrome CLI denial

Tried again with Discover for a CLI on Wed. and got a denial.  I've only had the card year and one month and my last CLI was to $1800 when it was unsecured in late June.  I got CLI denied at the beginning of October for "insufficient experience with current limit" and probably should have waited longer before trying again but at least it was a soft pull so no harm. I'm thinking I may get the same answer again this time and it probably doesn't help that 7 of the last 8 months I've not reported a balance at statement closing and it's not getting all that much of my spend either.

Re: Discover It Chrome CLI denial

The reporting/non-reporting of a balance wouldn't be the issue. They can still see how much you're spending each month.

The issue would be low spend, which you admitted to.

If they denied for insufficient use of card and you haven't changed how you use the card you will continue to get those reasons and continued denials .

Re: Discover It Chrome CLI denial

I do PIF, buit right now it's not been a great go to because a majority of my CC spend is in the SavorOne 3% categories plus I use Uber regularly so I've been hammering that card. Gas is the only category it's my top reward.  My short to medium term goal that started fairly recently has been slam the SavorOne in hopes of getting a CLI in 6-7 months like I did with the QS1 that is now a V1.  After getting a CLI on it, hope that they start allowing PCs to Cashback again and give it more of my spend again.  If it's stuck staying a Chrome I can still increase the spend and take lesser rewards to hopefully get a CLI.

I was stuck at $1500 on mine and been denied everytime for a CLI. I applied for a second Discover IT and was approved for $7000. Right now Discover has referral bonuses of $100 if you apply from a referral link.

I haven't received the letter with the reason yet.  On my previous denial it was insufficient experience with current limit, not insufficient usage.  I'm guessing this one is insufficient usage but could be insufficient experience again for all I know.  ISince the increase to $1800 CL in late June my usage rounded to the nearest dollar has been

  • Jul $812
  • Aug/Sep (combined in one statement because I changed my due date to a few days earlier $2184
  • Oct $412
  • Nov $99

I don't know how much Discover wants to see but this month I won't be doing myself any favors as I'll likely be no more than $200.

As mentioned upthread, they want to see you use it as their daily driver, nearly maxing it out and paying it off. $200 here, $99 there, and other small amounts won't help. You'll basically have to SD your other cards, including your SavorOne and maybe forego some higher rewards for at least a few months consecutively if you hope to get anything out of them.

Re: Discover It Chrome CLI denial

I did the math for this month and would have cost me about $35 in rewards to SD the SavorOne so something for me to keep in mind.  The more I think about it, assuming they still keep on with the no PCs, I almost wonder if it would be better to just not bother going for an increase on this card in the short to medium term.  Maybe I should just keep using it primarily for gas only and then when I apply for my next card consider looking at an It Cashback for the categories if I don't app for a 3%+ gas card.  I've seen others get better limits on a second Disco than they have on their first if they've got a better profile at the time of the second app.  My profile is by no means good but it's been gradually improving with time.

Re: Discover It Chrome CLI denial

Fwiw, I put ok spend on my card, but nothing close to max.  From my cli to 4k in March I put $800-1300 on it most months and they gave me an auto cli to 5k in September.  It's definitely more heavy use than 200, but having to max it is definitely not a hard rule. other data and patterns must be in play.  Idk how they'll take my next request in May or so, but I didn't even ask for the last one...

It's also a chrome that was originally a secured.
