Hello, my son, 19, applied today for a Discover Student Chrome card. After uploadeing a copy of his SSN card the Discover agent told him his application was not approved becuase he credit file shows a diff SSN number than the one we used in the application. I confirmed the one we used on the app is the one his SSN shows.... I have no idea whats going on here... Identity theft? So as a result i start to try and get his free credit reports online. Experian errors out with some strange error, same does Transunion (via annualcreditreport.com), calling toll free numbers is useless as well after 1 hour of trying... Equifax allowed him to create a profile but the credit report is blank.
Not sure how to proceed here. Even if he has ZERO credit history, we should be able to pull up a blank credit report from Experian and Transunion correct?
Split file, perhaps? Or does your son maybe have the same name as their father/grandfather and the files are mixed up?
1) Request a copy of his Lexis Nexis consumer report.
2) Send requests in writing to each of the 3 CRAs requesting a copy of his credit report, don't bother with trying to do it online or via a phone call.
This could simply be a matter LN mistakenly associating someone else's SSN instead of or in addition to your son's own SSN with his LN consumer file - it happens. This can be fixed but first you have to learn where the breakdown is.
I also have had issues getting an Experian credit report from annualcreditreport.com. You can request one by mail. Might have to call the SSA?

If he has "0 history", as in no cards, no loans, there is no report to pull.
Even if he got a card, it would take 6 months for score to generate, but he would have a report in that case.
In other words, if there is really nothing in his name, he doesn't have a credit report for them to pull.
No, my son does not share the same name as me or his grandfather. Its actually a very uncommon name.
