Discover card approval weirdness...

Discover Card... go figure.

I can't even get them to give me a card. I only have 2 satified judgements from 2008 reporting on EQ and no other derogs. My scores and cards are below and I keep getting denied. I do have several new accounts and a pretty thin file. Average age of accounts about a year and a 19% util.

My wife just got approved for their card with a foreclosure in 2012, 8 active collections and High utilization (about 78% across all accounts).. What gives.. Discover card approves someone who is high risk and denies someone who is a much lower risk.. I don't get it.

@Loskene,

Sorry to hear... Get your wife to add you on as an AU.  And then try again in a few months if you want one of your own.

Re: Discover card approval weirdness...

Thanks Yes.

I have not tried yet again with them since March. I can't have any new inquiries or accounts. I am on track and waiting to build and close on my house in December. Plus, I am supposed to be in the garden to stay for awhile. Catch-22's i tell you Smiley Tongue

Re: Discover card approval weirdness...

That's odd because I got approved with a unpaid judgement from 2009 at the time my score was 645 with 29% util. What's your score?

Re: Discover card approval weirdness...

I think Discover is really picky about AAoA. I've been helping a few friends rebuild and the ones who are around a year with better scores are rejected unless they have a cosigner or just flat out declined. Myself and others with longer histories and collections, charge offs and lates are accepted as long as the past year or two has good payment history.

Starting Score-(01/2017): FICO ||EX:575--EQ:549--TU:588||
Current Score--(04/2018): FICO ||EX:686--EQ:697--TU:715||

Not so always, young grasshopper.

AAoA about a year.  No baddies.  Scores in sig.  Got approved discover.  They do like thinner files, I think it also helps if you have their competitors, Amex and/or Chase (preferably both) IF you have clean report.  My two cents.

Re: Discover card approval weirdness...

My scores and cards are in my sig. I'm definitely above 650. The last denial letter mentioned public record or collection, too many inquires, too many new accounts and age of tradelines too new. My AAoA is a year but my wife has a much thicker file. Maybe 5-6 year AAoA.

But with all the derogs, I figured they would deny her, some farely recent as well. Guess I'll try my luck March and see how it goes then.
