So before I applied for the Amazon Prime card Discover kept telling me with my great credit I should look at what cards I qualify for. So I did it one day and I was pre-qualified for all their cards but did not apply for any. I just did pre-qualify again today and all it shows me now is their secured card, ROFLMAO. Good luck getting my business with that insane offer. So much for that 5% card. Probably for the best, Discover is still not accepted all over. Remember that old joke. The only thing you Discover with your Discover card is that nobody takes it, lol.
Not that they are particularly inquiry sensitive (if I remember correctly...), but didn't you JUST get a double pull for chase and another for thr FNBO card? I didn't have time to stalk your entire history - but the inq's for those plus if any of the new cards are reporting yet could easily throw off Discover.
Yes, three new inquiries if you actually count the Chase ones twice. It is one thing to say, hey wait a minute, you maybe are getting two more cards, and I did but not reporting yet, but to then offer a secured card? Why would anybody with a perfect record like myself (because all my baddies are long gone) get a secured card? It just is insane to even think for one second I would be interested in that. And quite frankly if I would be that insane and apply they should decline it because that is a red flag in my opinion.

I don't remember that joke. Contrary to the alleged joke, I've never had much of a problem using my Discover cards anywhere. Maybe the joke is so old that it's just not relevant anymore...
Seriously though, I see no reason to take credit decisions so personally. It's a risk based business decision. If you liked them enough to consider applying for a Discover card, why dog them when it doesn't turn out as you want it to. It is what it is and you move on.

Their secure card is their default option. "Don't qual for anything else? If you REALLY want discover card, take this one."
It seems like you took their decision personally.
It is always personal and anybody saying it is not is just fooling themselves. Even as a teen I already rejected generalizations because all it is is laziness of the other party to really get to know you. Instead of making the secured card the default it should have said due to recent inquieris on your report you are not pre-qualified for any of our cards at this time. Please check back at a later date since your credit score overall is high enough to qualify without too many recent inquiries. I think all of us should demand way more courtesy from financial institutions and transparancy. In that regard credit unions way outperform any major bank in this country. Only small local banks have similar great customer service. Also look who is offering the best unlimited cash back card, at credit union.
Those specific details would be provided to you when they do a hard pull. Can't expect a full detailed analysis of your credit and reasons why you didn't pre-qualify based off a soft inquiry.

Financial institutions aren't in place to stroke one's ego. Lending decisions are a business decision, like it or not. They aren't in the business of letting you down easy or offering a participation trophy, so to speak.
Oh, and credit unions don't practice the suggestions you pose either. Hope your next denial from a CU isn't so tough on you.

Discover will send the letter after a prequal denial.
I have had Discover since when the card first came out in the late 80s/90s. It's accepted much more now than it was decades ago. Oddly, it was one of the hardest cards to get approved for at the time and Sears Financial Services owned the card.
I have played around with Prequal sites and even with scores around 800, one day I can go on and be offered everything, the next month maybe there is no offers 🤷🏻♂️ Not sure at all the algorithms that go into it, but credit reports and our positioning change all the time.
