I know I'm a little late on weighing in, but after reading the posts on this thread I have to say I'm shocked I was approved today for Discover when compared to you guys. ![]()
I'm in college and I had no credit until this year. I've had a checking account with Bank of America for a few years and I applied for their Travel Rewards card in May and was approved. SL was $600 and is still $600. No late payments. Anyways last week marked my first six months of credit and my FICO score is 681. My TU score was 643 but it's now 636, after Discover pulled it. I decided to apply for the Discover It chrome for students yesterday and after providing proof that I am a student, they approved me today for $500.
I know my CL is super low but I am a full time student with a part time job and only make less than $3000/year
I'm just happy to add to my CL.
I didn't think I would get improved and just browsing the forums I see so many people saying they got denied but they have way better credit and profiles than I do.
Discover IS nuts afterall.
Wanderlust, from what I've gathered they love thin profiles. Doesn't matter your credit score as long as it's not super low and you don't have lates/derogatories.
I got approved through the prequalify link. I kept checking that link until an offer showed up. If you have a definite APR than you're most likely to get approved.
If your APR ranges from x-xx% probably not. Next time try doing that instead of going for the actual application. I tried for 6 months and finally it showed up.

So after gardening now for about 9 months give or take, I stepped out today to try for Discover AGAIN as they're the only major CC unattainable to me. My TU score they pulled was 702, 24% UTIL and no baddies for over 3 years (no major baddies at all). 0 INQs past 6 months and 5 past 12 months. Wait for it ... DECLINED but offered a Joint applicant or secured card to build history.
So her s where the experiment comes in. My buddy wanted a Discover too so we applied online together. His stats are: EQ 641, lower income than me, 5 inquiries past 6 months and a 30 day late 13 months ago. 20% UTIL. APPROVED $1800!!! I nearly tooted.
Here's what I learned. Discover "Credit analysts" are bogus and not credit analysts at all. They have ABSOLUTELY NO POWER TO OVERTURN THE COMPUTERS DECISION - period. They are basically there to answer the phone and run your info through the system. I reconned all the way up to a Senior VP LOL and they said their analysts any override the system unlike BARCLAY or chase for example. Complete and utter joke - not sure why they call them credit analysts when all they do is read off of a screen and can not override a denial or recon a SL (buddy tried to recon limit to $3000, nope).
So after nearly a year I wasted an INQ. THANK GOD only pulled one Bureau. I declined the joint and said adios.
Discover is truly an enigma - one I am done trying to deal with. My buddy said to just secure a card for $2000 or so to get history - why would I do that with $100+ of unsecured lines??? Lol. Election Day laugh !!
Um, polite disagreement here. I applied once with massive baddies (using a Fako score). Unable to obtain. Cleaned up all baddies, no problem. I DID NOT apply for prime with baddies after that. Waited until baddies gone, took two years of hard work (gone six years from initiation date). We are not owed credit, it is earned. Keep this in mind.

Once you hit $100k+ in credit it's tougher to get in with them. Not impossible just tougher
What are you talking about? That's not the case at all! TCL doesn't have anything to do with getting in the door. I had 150K in credit when I applied and it was an instant approval. What does matter probably more than the TCL is the amount of open accounts regardless of the CL. If you have 50 CC's and only 40K in CL with those cards it's less likely to get an approval than someone with 5-6 cards and 150K in CL's.
I had quite a few new CCs reporting when they approved me earlier this year... and as you can see a whole bunch more afterwards.
Discover is truly a mystery.

Looking over your replies to other threads I would be inclined to disagree.
