DiscoverIT Card after IIB

This July will mark 2 full years since discharge Ch 7 BK.

I'm having an insane itch to app for another card, but more specifically those that offers reward - any rewards, I don't care. My active credit cards are over 6 months old, but I established my credit history for more than a year now since BK D/C.

I've been almost primarily using Barclay Apple Visa because it has points, 2x for restaurants, 1x for anything else. Taking advantage as much as I can to earn those gift cards that I intend on using later this year. This card is carrying balance, utilization is 53%, but overall utilization is 16%.

I have CapOne and MerrickBank, I completed credit steps / double line after 6 months. CapOne from $1000 to $1500, Merrick from $700 to $1400.

I've been trying to pre-qualify for Discover, some would get approved 1 year post DC, some later, some earlier - YMMV. Since yesterday, I haven't been able to clear prequalification because something went wrong (?). But previously, I've been getting the reason I don't prequalify for Discover is due to prior relationship and deliquency. I included Discover in BK.

Last fall, CapOne didn't prequalify me, but I app'd anyway and was approved on the spot for $1,000. Would this be the same situation if I app'd for Discover even though I don't prequalify?

If I should avoid Discover, any card do I pursue or do I keep gardening? I also tried PenFed Platinum/Pathfinder, rejected. Afterward, I learned that I needed to wait until 2 years post DC for better result. Do I hold out?

My EQ and EX will have charged off private student loans fall off by September 2019; the only baddie on my TU is the BK7.

I think I just need someone to tell me to stay in the garden...

Re: DiscoverIT Card after IIB

I would not risk Discover without a prequal.

I can tell you this though...Capital One cards can get better and better as your relationship and scores grow.

Often you will have to get a new card, but there are plenty who have been denied a CLI on a $2000 card and got a $5000 SL on a new card.

I went from $3000 on one card to $3000 on next card to $10,000 on next card to $10,000 on next card to $30,000 on last card.

Check for Cap One prequal on new card.  Venture (not Venture One) has a minimum limit of $5k so if you get prequal for that, then you know your Cap One SLs should be good.

I would stick to the prequals.

GL!

Rebuild started in 2014  -  $100k unsecured credit in 2017  -  $500k unsecured credit in 2024.

Discover will take time to warm back up to you and it could be up to 10 years or more. The biggest thing you can do is not obtain a slew of HP's and keep your utility down. I would disregard rewards now and get your profile tight.

Re: DiscoverIT Card after IIB

IMO Cap1 and Discover are the most forgiving lenders after BK if included or not...  I think you main problem is low 600 scores..  Around 640-660 and probably be golden.  Target market for both Discover and Cap1 is rebuilders.  Some exceptions in there of course, but they want to be your goto card and hopefully you carry a balance with them is most likely their business model.  They are SP'ing your Experian score and if it is 637 as your signature says, probably just a bit to low esp if you burnt them.

Re: DiscoverIT Card after IIB

Experian scores are hard to improve. I'm waiting for the day to come to do EE on my charged off account. That's one thing, but is there anything else I can do to improve my score for EX? There is nothing that may appear off to me on my EX report.

I'm extremely comfortable with where I am now with EQ, and I feel TU could do better. I do fully understand that each bureau's scoring algorithm differs.

I'd also recommend checking the prequal for another Capital One. Also check to see if you're eligible for an upgrade for the Platinum. I also started out with the Platinum and upgraded to Quicksilver 4 months in. You can start getting 1.5% back at the very least.

If you don't mind my asking, how long after discharge did you get the Barclays? Did you burn them?

Re: DiscoverIT Card after IIB

I got a Discover card 5 years after filing BK and I IIB.   They gave a small $1000 CL.  I already had 3 cap 1 cards with limits of 10k, 8750 and 14k so the 1k from Discover didn't mean anything to me.  I app'd them just to see if they would even give me a card.

I also app'd the Uber card at the same time and they declined me.  They said I IIB but I don't remember having a card from them.  They said they purchased some United card that I had a balance.  So Barclay is not forgiving for me.  When I look at my credit report from 2012 when I filed BK it tells me the that Barclay was paid in full and the balance $0.   I wanted the Uber card so my wifed app'd and I became a AU.
