FNBO Amex Decline

This past weekend I got the "By Invitation Only" envelope in the mail from FNBO for their Amex.  I wouldn't even have considered applying for this one on my own, but a quick google search and it looked like these are fairly solid approvals from a highly liked bank.  I logged in today to check application status, and it's been declined.  I'm annoyed for the EX hard pull, but honestly, this decline hasn't bummed me out the way it would have a few months ago.  I have some decent accounts now (including a Centurion backed Amex), and I know I'm on the right path to even better cards in a few months.

As always, I'm thankful for these boards because a) I wouldn't have any of the cards I have now; and b) I know that good, qualified people get declined all the time, and it's not the end of the world.

Re: FNBO Amex Decline

FNBO pre-approval offers can be solid provided not much changed in your overall profile from the time they pre-screened your information. That's why some folks refer to them as bungee pre-approvals.

That's just the nature of the credit beast. So there must have been something drastic that changed that made them no longer interested. Also, the fine print on the pre-approval lists those conditions. Plus, regardless if approved or not, it was still going to be HP for their review.

You may need to review the declined letter to see what reasons they cited for not getting approved.

Thanks.  I know all of that.  I knew it was going to be a HP, I'm just annoyed that I wasted one.  I'm waiting for the letter to see what their reasons are, although very little has changed in my profile recently, other than a few SP CLIs.

I don't know yet. The status just says declined. I'll post more once I receive the letter.

It's not "pre-approved", it's invitation.  I am certain on this because I received this mailer last week.

If that's the case,  that means you met some preliminary criteria that the creditor got from the CRA.  Only basis for this preliminary criteria is to say you fit within a certain criteria. Whether that be based on credit score, geography, etc...  invitations doesn't get you closer to approval than anyone else IMO
