FNBO pre-approval offers can be solid provided not much changed in your overall profile from the time they pre-screened your information. That's why some folks refer to them as bungee pre-approvals.
That's just the nature of the credit beast. So there must have been something drastic that changed that made them no longer interested. Also, the fine print on the pre-approval lists those conditions. Plus, regardless if approved or not, it was still going to be HP for their review.
You may need to review the declined letter to see what reasons they cited for not getting approved. It's not "pre-approved", it's invitation. I am certain on this because I received this mailer last week.
If that's the case, that means you met some preliminary criteria that the creditor got from the CRA. Only basis for this preliminary criteria is to say you fit within a certain criteria. Whether that be based on credit score, geography, etc... invitations doesn't get you closer to approval than anyone else IMO
Exactly. I meant this to clarify the OP and the mailer clearly states invitation, and thus gives you an invitation #.
Mine actually had the words "You're pre-approved" in the letter, though.
And I think everyone is missing the point of my post, which was "Thanks to these forums and the wealth of information I've learned here, I kind of don't care about the denial."

Sorry OP no disrespect intended to you. In your initial post you only referenced by invitation only which is why we stated what we stated. We were doing that only because it appeared that you stated you were invited to apply and then denied, thus our comments about the difference between preapproval vs invitation to apply. I meant you no ill will, just was providing information based on the information that I was provided

Their letters may vary - mine says pre-approved and doesn't even "invite me to apply" it states to go to their website to "accept my card".
as far as the recent changes, i received one this spring - i had just opened about 5-6 new accounts the past few weeks and was worried, as i had no idea when they did their SP, so i didn't apply. after gardening a few months, i think 3, i received another offer. since i KNEW nothing had changed, and was declined within hours. reason on the letter was my charged off student loan from 4-5 years ago. they really ticked me off, but to their credit, they didn't bother sending me any more offers. i HATE when i get a preapproval 2 weeks after i'm declined for a card. nice enough of them to not pour salt in the wound.
anyways, everyone else says their pre-approvals are pretty solid, and i don't think 1 or 2 declines changes that much. just wanted to note that solid doesn't equal guarantee. stating the obvious, i know.
