Finally Got an AMEX Pre-qualification and a swift denial

prequal.png

I'm sad...I shouldve known.  My EXP is just 668 right now, but I figured the high APR was because of the score.  And I wasted an INQ after 5 months of none.

Re: Finally Got an AMEX Pre-qualification and a swift denial

So sorry to hear that. I applied a couple months ago and was declined for the BCE. Then, people on this board said try for one of their charge cards first, which are easier to get, then apply for the regular cards. Well, I tried for the Amex green card the next day, and it was an auto-denial. They auto-decline if you were just denied.

Then, someone said to wait exactly 30 days and try again. I waited exactly 30 days and tried again for the charge card first. I was approved for the Amex Green. Then, tried for the other easy credit card, Delta Gold Skymiles-approved. Then, Hilton HHonors-approved.

So it is not a lost cause. Wait exactly 30 days and apply for a charge card first. That's your window into Amex. Then, try for the easier credit cards. After, that, try for the card you want.

Your score is not bad. I had a 668 when I applied. There is just a trick into getting an Amex first. Once you get that first approval, then the gateway is open.

Good luck!!

Thank you for the tip.  I was so excited about the prequalification - it's my first with them EVER.  The attached screenshot is from today.  I got the initial prequalification a few days ago.

I'll wait and go from there.

Re: Finally Got an AMEX Pre-qualification and a swift denial

I never had any prequalifications from them. I always checked, but nothing. So I cold apped for all of mine. So there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Amex is approving scores even in the low 620s now. So you definitely have a chance. Good luck!!

Sorry to hear that. You'll get in soon enough. I've held off trying to get them so far for this same resaon...not wanting a denial on a HP.

Re: Finally Got an AMEX Pre-qualification and a swift denial

I also never got approved for any pre qualifications. In one day I got approved for the Amex platinum, gold, bce, and delta gold.  The pre qualifications aren't always right I've noticed.

Re: Finally Got an AMEX Pre-qualification and a swift denial

OP there's still hope. I've never gotten a prequal for Amex. I've cold applied before and declined always. Until this past Sunday I was finally approved for the the Delta Gold and I immediately applied for the Hilton Card but my app was immediately placed under review. It gave me a number to call and when I did rep told me she would call me back in 5 days to continue to application.

Crossings fingers that I get that one too.

Micheland30, i could not agree more. I got denied by them a few times in the past, especially second half of last year while i was rebuilding. Finally mid-december i got approved for BCE with only $500 limit over the phone due to FA's on my reports, and the limit told me that i was a  borderline with them, and got denied a charge card.  January 19th, applied for Delta skymiles and got denied again. Finally after using my bce for 3 months, April 1st, i applied for Delta gold, PRG and Green all with instant approvals. EX only 649 and a very high uti at the moment. So once you are in with Amex, it is a lot easier to get approved for more cards down the road, they value your relation and history with them more than your credit report.

OP wait for a month, and apply for the charge card, if approved, add a revolver to it. Use both the cards for 3 to 6 months with some usage and history, get a cli on revolver at 61 days, then apply for a better revolver if you want to. Your chances will be alot higher once they see a little with you. Good Luck!
