If a lender is asking for verification - as long as everything lines up - that sounds like an approval to me.

Well no, in my experience with HSBC last year the security department has to verify ID before the app is sent to underwriting for a decision. I would balk at signing a SSA-89, that authorizes the Social Security Admin to verify the SS# you provide against your name & date of birth. The most I've ever been asked for is a copy of my SS card. HSBC was a royal pain on ID verification last year, and it sounds like they're making themselves even more of a pain.

As mentioned above, that's typically the initial point of verification.  This doesn't necessarily translate into an approval, though.  Most HSBC applications that go into exception processing tend to have these document requirements before any decisions is made.  So, 50/50 at best OP.

This is the email I received this morning after sending them all the stuff they needed....makes no sense....

Thank you for applying for an HSBC Cash Rewards Mastercard® credit card.

Unfortunately, we are unable to approve your application, because we are unable to verify your identity.

Please note, a credit check was not performed.

I went round and round with HSBC trying to open a high yield savings account.  I got disgusted and just gave up.  I suspect they got burned so badly with the money laundering stuff several years ago that they are being SUPER picky about identifying potential customers.  More trouble than they're worth, as far as I'm concerned.

Well, in the end if they can't verify or confirm the information as provided with other identity sources, then they can't open an account for you OP. It happens often with HSBC.

On the upside, no HP.
