HSBC Pre-Qualification Request - 'Unable to approve' - What's in a Soft Pull??

This was nice. HSBC responded to my pre-qual by mail.

Reasons:

Insufficient number of credit references provided

Date of last inquiry too recent

Equifax only  - 712

I didn't think they could get an actual score from a SP.

Starting Score: 545
Current Score: 656
Goal Score: 850

Sounds like you don't have enough established credit for them to approve you.  If that is the case you should try Cap1 or Discover

There are some lenders that will respond to a denied prequal check with a formal denial of credit letter like you received. When you receive the letter it will include the bureau they used, as well as the score they based part of their decision on. You can absolutely see your credit score via SP. HSBC is just one of those that sends snail mail every time you try their prequalify site.
