So I recently paid off all my CCs with a personal loan, and my scores have already started to increase.
Right now my main focus is getting a Home Equity Loan through DCU once my EQ FICO 5 is >=700 (prior to payoff my score was 662). I am hoping this is sooner rather than later, because I will then be looking to aquire a couple of new cards. I am assuming it is better to wait to get the new cards after this is done, but if it's not then I'd love to know.
I haven't gotten a new card in almost 2 years. I am looking at the Slate (for the balance transfer offer), the Marriott Visa, the Disney Visa (the no fee, for the park perks and Disney discounts only), and perhaps the Ring. I do not want to go overboard on applications, and my priority is the Marriott and Disney cards, as we will be going there in November. Once I have those two, I won't be in a hurry for more.
My question is is there a certain amount of time after my overall UT drops to <9% that I should wait to apply for new cards? How can I maximize my chances of getting approved for those two cards?
I do not plan on getting in shallow, nevermind deep. Have you seen Jaws?
Now that I have reduced my payments by almost $400 / mo, am actually paying it down vs. minimums, and have a budget in place that we are following, we can build up our savings, and use my regular quarterly bonus $$ to bank for upcoming vacations, house repairs, car down payments, etc. vs using them to play catchup.
The Home Equity Loan will further reduce my payments by another $400 or so by refinancing the personal loan, and also give us a good chunk of $$ for a couple of house projects we've been wanting to do for a long time.
I plan on getting the Marriott for the bonus points offer and the free night, and using the Disney for the meet and greets and the discounts while we are there (with money already set aside in our vaca fund). I will book my flights on my SW Visa for the points, once my Q1 bonus is paid out and PIF immediately.
At some point soon I will need to figure out what cards to get/use to start maximizing rewards by using them for everything and PIF each month.
