I personally would wait the tiniest bit, just for her to 100% be a member. It can take a lil for them to process it, and you have to sign an agreement form that can be snail mailed, faxed, or e-messaged for it to be 100% official. I personally wondered if that played a role in me being denied for the Flagship, cuz right as I got NFCU membership I applied for the Flagship. They denied me for it, stating "they couldn't approve me for the minimum SL" as the reason. Yet I waited like a month later and got their CashRewards card for 8.2k which is higher than the minimum for the Flagship.. which made me wonder what was up with that

She still did not get anything in the mail yet except a PIN for her ATM card. Its funny that she got only an email so far letting her know that she is now a member with NFCU and nothing else. Rather than sending her welcome kit and her Access number, they sent her PIN for her card which she doesn't know anything about it. Anyway, she did call them 2 days ago and customer service lady confirmed that my friend is now a proud member of NFCU and she was even given the Access Number over the phone and advised to wait a bit to receive the welcome kit. I think my friend would wait a little bit for the welcome kit and opening of some accounts with them before applying for any credit card with them. She does have a thick profile, though, if it does matter to NFCU.

They do a horrible job explaining this but you don't need to wait for your snail mail. After you get the congratulations email just go online to set up your account. When you're done you'll be able to see your access code and account numbers.
I applied online and I funded my initial share with a business card. I have no clue why but the $5 share showed up as a purchase, something about membership fees. The legalese says you can fund up to $250 per day with cards by calling their number. I imagine those are coded as cash advances since they're not as essential as your membership fee.
But we are not required to sign up for a checking account anyway, right? If so, then what's the deal with this cup card? lols
Do you know a sure way for her to find out if there is any account in her name, like saving account or checking account if she doesn't remember, without calling them??

You could always stop by a branch if you have one nearby?

Yes, just go to their website and hit "Sign up for online banking". It will ask for name, DOB and SSN. If she's officially a member it'll let her sign up. After logging in you get access to every account on file.
Since she already got a CUCARD pin and access code her accounts are probably finished setting up. You should expect the actual CUCARD to show up in a different envelope later.
Every member is only required to maintain a savings with 1 share ($5 worth) to qualify as an NFCU member. You don't actually need a checking. Some people never sign up for a checking or do it too late (myself included). So to let these weirdos have access to ATMs they send a CUCARD which is basically a debit card tied to a savings account with a lot more restrictions. I don't think you can make purchases with it.
I don't recall getting much of a welcome kit. Maybe a letter with some account information but nothing I couldn't get from using online banking.

Thanks. But why you said that their debit card wont allow to make any purchases?? Really? What restrictions we are talking about to have on debit card and how to take care of them to have a smooth process?
How to make deposit to accounts with NFCU? My friend does add external/ an account from another bank to her online banking with NFCU but when she tried to transfer money, her accounts with NFCU didn't highlight...meaning she was not able to make any transfer.

@Anonymous You can't do ACH pull into NFCU. You have to ACH push from external account into NFCU.
Perhaps, try Zelle or alternate methods?

Thanks. My friend called NFCU today and asked all these questions. She was told that-(1) she can not make a deposit online to her accounts (checking, savings, money market, etc) with NFCU from external (another) bank account. Rather account-holder can do it by speaking to a representative. If a debit card from an external bank account will be used to make the deposit to accounts with NFCU then amount will be reflected right away within a second, and if NFCU account (s) is new then it could be funded only up to 250/a day for 30 days, and after 30 days of opening the account the limit is $500/a day to deposit. Only time external bank is allowed to make the deposit/payment online is when making a credit card payment or a payment to any kind of loan with NFCU. She was also told that she can not use Zelle to fund her accounts with them if she has already been registered to another bank account with Zelle because Zelle allows only one account to be registered at a time by the phone number. However, she is allowed to do ACH from another bank to NFCU accounts as its stated above and checks deposit too on their Mobil app. There is no any NFCU branch in her state nor even any ATM. I think she is all set for the time being..and might pull the trigger tonight for the credit card with them as she heard about midnight trick/hack if it really works/matters.

Didn't work for me. I applied for a More Rewards late at night. My application had to be manually reviewed so applying at night made no difference. I had a 775 experian score/800 TU vantagescore but no personal credit history. Didn't get the card.
You might have better luck getting an automated result. My credit history is pretty weird.
