I do not want to scare you off but realistically, it's better to take a break from this site (temporary or permanent) and as TRC said honestly seek some help. Credit cards can be an addiction just like anything else. Some members here have realized this and laid off the site and/or apps. Some still are addicted unfortunately.

You can have a good credit score and history with only a few cards. You do not need to obtain 20 or 30 cards for that purpose. You will see people with that many on here, but it's a personal choice rather than something needed for good credit.

I don't know if you notice but OP just joined the site.  Also, people are able to resist temptation where a group of people are with the same expectation and goal with a strong example as MyFico.  Not just in the garden thread but life in general.

So if OP just joined the site and needs help, asking OP to take a break from the site does not help.  Reading and properly educating oneself on credit may just do the opposite.

I think it's a bit too general to say "people are able to resist temptation when..." there are plenty of people in the past in the garden thread who "fell out of the garden" because of xyz. Sure it helps some people, but for others, it really doesn't, and reading this site can lead people to want to app more because they see all the cards being discussed.

Now that's not to say they cannot or shouldn't be here, because there is good advice to be had, but it's an individual thing. There's no one solution for everyone. Maybe being in the garden thread will help them, but maybe not. It's not 100%; nothing is.

I think the best thing for OP is simple: not charging more than they can afford, paying down their debts, and stop apping.

You said it yourself.. Sure it helps some people and we don't know if it will help OP.  And it is not general to say people are able to resist the temptation.  That has been proven with tons of research and fact.

Why did you join MyFico?  You must have had a goal in mind.  Just like me and all the hundreds of people on this site.  We are all working towards a common goal - GOOD CREDIT

Yes this site is about good credit, but if OP lurks long enough, they'll see that is not the entire purpose of the site. There's also reward chasing, bonus hunting, etc which doesn't equate with good credit necessarily, it equates with going after rewards which is a seperate thing. Hence why I said maybe OP would just be more tempted. But maybe not. Who knows. The only person who knows is OP.

Point me a thread on here promoted by MyFico on bonus hunting, reward chasing etc.. as you stated. When people inquire about a particular card and what they can get for it, lets not make the mistake of interpretating that as bonus hunting/churning.

We are not going to be derail the thread and turn this into a bonus chasing /churing debate.

?

There are threads all day long about bonuses and rewards.

Bonuses and rewards mean nothing if you can't pay your debt, as they are eaten up with interest. So if OP gets tempted into more cards, that's not a good thing.

Sure there are, but people genuinely need these cards.  You are always of the opinion people apply and inquire about these cards because they want to churn/chase bonuses and that isn't true.

As stated, the main point of focus here is OP not churning /chasing bonus discussions.

Not everyone " geniunely needs" every card, but that's another topic.

I didn't say "OP is trying to chase/churn rewards"....I said the site has many different aspects, some of which will help them and others which  may distract them. You are the one turning it into a debate. I simply stated that it was a portion of the site which may not help them, and that's all.

Back to OP...

No debate going on.  I am just asking you to point us (me) included to the portion on MyFico where what you are claiming is going on - promotion of churning/chasing bonus hence a detriment to OP.  Point it to us so that we can address it.

Re: I can't stop applying for credit cards. Please help!!!

OP,

I'm not saying that this applies to you, so please don't take offense if this is not true. But some of the language that you are using in your posts is recognizable to me, and I suspect it might be recognizable to others, too. If you're saying that you are having trouble resisting or controlling the impulse for apply for credit even as you're strolling through the mall -- even if you know that you're most likely going to denied, or might have trouble paying, and that you know there will be long-term damage to your file -- then this issue might not be about card churning or cultivating a good credit file or even gardening. It may be that you're applying to feed other needs than collecting miles.

You don't need to be taking advice from internet strangers if indeed this is an issue with impulse control -- if you're having trouble with it, please talk to a professional, as someone said earlier, or find resources online. Like I said, this might not apply to you. But if it does, it's not a credit card issue.

Good luck.

Exactly. OP needs to see what the deeper issue is here. I don't think a garden thread, however supportive it may be, is enough to solve this.

I have to agree with Yes-Its-Me on this one. I have had pretty much the same issue as the OP, just slightly different. After going so many years with nothing but denials it felt so good to finally be approved for something. And believe it or not, it's coming to this site that has helped me realize the consequences of frequent apping and has also helped me not get in over my head. I have learned so much from this site, and while seeing the approvals of others can be tempting at times, all it takes is reading about someone's denial or issue they are having to snap me back to reality. My advice would be to stay away from the approvals section, but not stay away from this site. There is too much info on this site that anyone rebuilding, or is new to credit, needs to know. IMO it's better to learn from the mistakes and wisdom of others than to have to learn things the hard way.
