Back in February, I came out of the garden for a prequalified offer on a card I've wanted for a long time - Citi's Costco Anywhere Visa. Well, that was denied immediately, recon failed as well. They stated my income and expenses did not match up, so I could not be approved. At the time, I had $65K in sole income ($145K household) and $30K in car loans, but no mortgage or credit card debt, so myself and other MyFICO'ers were confused about the denial reason. Silver lining is that I had quite the app spree over the next few months, gathering several decent cards and signup bonuses.
Fast forward to yesterday, and I decide to check Citi's prequalifer again, and there it is - the Costco Anywhere Visa. It's been 4 months since I apped anything (Blispay), I've paid off roughly $7K of the $30K in car loans, and my sole income has increased to $90K (household is $170K), so I decided to give it a go.
Immediate denial, again. I called the app status line: The sole denial reason was too many recent credit inquiries. I called recon again, and spoke with a very nice woman, and still denied due to inquiries. My EX did take a beating on inquiries earlier this year: six inquiries in the last 6 months, and one of them is Citi. I've seen others with 10+ inquiries get approved, so I guess their computer's definition of too many is arbitrary.
I believe Citi won't approve with 6 or more inquires in 6 months.
Might try recon.
Also I got denied by Citi for a 26 year old chargeoff (long memory I guess) but overturned on recon.
Sorry to hear. Im in the same place. I applied last November and denied for BK reporting. CITI was NOT IIB. My Ex and Tu are now clean so I applied yesterday and denied again.
My CCT Experian data points for yesterday are.
722 Fico 8
15% Util
11 inq last 12 months 3 in the last 6
AAOA 3 years 1 month.
I'm not going to apply for this card again. Hopefully NFCU will extend double points at Costco beyond 31 Dec.
I feel your pain...Chase & Citi don't seem to want my business. So be it, other lenders do.
That's crazy! They must pick and choose who to deny for INQs. I don't understand the reasoning.

I had 10 in 6 months and was approved.
They just throw out an excuse of inquiries if they don't want to approve someone for whatever reason at least citi.. Plenty of people have been approved for various cards with them having over 15-20 inquiries in the last year or even possibly 6 months.
Sorry this happened OP.. Was recently approved for Citi Premier card with about 10 eq inquries in the last 12 months and probably 6-7 of those in the last 6 months. Once you are in with them you are pretty golden, getting in with them took me awhile!! Have been with them 7 months now and have gotten 3 cards in this time with them. Costco initially then Hilton (targeted) and recently the 50k TYP premier.
I thought the same about Citi that they don’t like inquiries. Let’s just say I have more than 10 inquiries and they keep sending me offers with a solid rate. A total of three cards. I applied for one and immediately got approved for a high SL.
The other two I passed on since the sign on bonus wasn’t good enough for me. I’ll wait for a better bonus and apply.
It it depends on your credit file. Might be something they don’t like.
I don't understand Citi either. I have their AAdvantage Platinum Select MC, but have been denied twice for the Costco VISA card.
The last denial letter mentioned only "Your credit report shows your balances on your revolving accounts are too high in relation to those credit lines." This despite my utilization is no more than 30 percent across the board.
I'm going to try and recon the latest denial with the Executive Office, Citicards Division. I shop a lot at Costco, but knowing Citi I don't hold out much hope for a positive outcome here...
Any advice would be welcome!
