Glad you passed on the Platinum.
If you care about the Amex SUBs, then there is an order one ought to follow to be allowed to get the Platinum SUB and Gold SUB.
If one first got the Platinum card/SUB, then one is not allowed to get Gold card SUB thereafter. However one can get the Platinum SUB after getting the Gold SUB.***
Thus, @MikeyMagic if you want to get those typically great sign up bonuses, you should go for the Gold first and then the Plat.
*** I believe I read this info from Doctor of Credit.

Awesome thank you for the tip. When I am ready to apply for an Amex charge card I will start out with the Gold and eventually work my way to Platinum if I need that card.

How did you get any sort of (pre)approval from them on the 1st pass, let alone a Platinum card? I thought AmEx only takes existing cardholders or customers, for any line of product...

I've read any number of anecdotal reports over the last six-months to one-year which indicates AMEX is marketing the Platinum directly to first-time AMEX card applicants. Why? Not sure, but my gut says it is possibly to make up for the members who downgraded or closed their Platinum cards after they hiked up the annual fee.
Chapter 13:
I categorically refuse to do AZEO!

Could be, and in fact you'd think they'd be much MORE willing to take people off the street who want to pay them a high annual fee - scratching my head, as usual.
