I've also always wondered.. I'm a student but is there honestly a difference in applying as a student and applying as employed?
i think so.... im a student but i have a full time job and therefore i dont use the student option.
i also wonder if it rent, own or other affects too! ?
Probably, and for the same reason you can't even rent a car until you are 25. Students are likely viewed as riskier.

True that
If you want to pay significantly more money yes. That's to offset the riskiness of youth

um so $50 deposit is significantly more money? lol. no. i am 23 and am in a rental now with a $50 deposit refundable to me once i return the car.
I always thought under 25 rentals aren't a deposit, rather an additional pre-day fee added to the daily fee, usually $25-30 per day fee. I know for sure that's hertz, Avis, budget, and enterprise's policies. Might be different for other companies that just require a refundable deposit.

The rent/own option just plays into they DTI ratio. Every CCC has a magic number (%) where housing plus all minimum pays of credit accounts cannot be more than 30% of your gross income (just an example). But from my experience, 30% seems to be the average DTI.
There are coupon codes available for those under 25.
I always used them, no problem. Of course I've always had comprehensive auto coverage, too.
