Re: Is a HP for a CLI really that bad?

@Aim_High

I once took a HP from Barclay's to raise a 7700 Barclay arrival card (rememember that ole thing!!) upon initial approval al the way up to 20k.

that was worth it.

I also once took a HP from BOA to raise a BOA rewards Americard (or some version - it was almost 10 years ago) to raise an initial limit from 5k to 30k to match my Amex BCE limit.... NOW THAT WAS WORTH IT!

taking a HP for a 2-3k increase where it will have no impact on your score.. wont help you in any way.... you also have to be ready and willing to talk to an underwriter. Call the backdoor, etc. have a plan in place. I always did, and it mostly paid off. That was the first time I was building my credit in my 20s. hah

Keep in mind also that Amex generally does a soft pull for increases. It's not 100% but from personal experience I've never been dinged with a HP requesting an increase.

Citi now does soft pulls for their core cards but it's a mixed bag when it comes to the co-branded cards issued through Citi Retail Services.  Some of them (Best Buy and Home Depot cards come to mind) always HP in response to a CLI request.

is this for CLIs or for pre approvals? I can't find a way to get any soft pull pre approvals. Could you send me a link or push me in the right direction. I paid of several thousand almost 10k with citi back in 2015 and I'm scared to pull the trigger on any of their cards. How do I check for pre approvals on their online site? I can't find it anywhere! lol I even banked with them at one point, depositing (and spending) several hundred thousand over about two years.

Re: Is a HP for a CLI really that bad?

HP or new accounts never seem to make much of a difference to my scores after a couple months go by so I don't mind much, unless it's an annoying issuer that is stingy about their CLI amounts. Once that happens I don't usually bother with them again, unless it's a card with generous rewards that I plan to use heavily

From my recent experience, @coldfusion, CITI will often do a soft pull for CLIs (once every six months) but only up to a point.   A few months ago, I had $45K on my Costco Visa and $49.5K on my AAdvantage Executive WEMC totaling $94,500 in credit with CITI.  They softpull approved another $1K on my Costco card to $46K but then denied to increase my AAdvantage Executive stating that they needed to do a hard pull for additional credit and that I had not authorized that hp.  (I didn't wish to do so at that time.)  So that leaves me tapped-out with $95,500 in CITI credit lines.  That's not bad, but lags my TCLs with Chase and BofA and my income would support a higher limit.  I've seen the AAdvantage card go much higher so perhaps it's a combination of the amount of spend, income reported, etc that is limiting overall TCL.  I've not been running heavy spend on the AA card.

@youngandcreditwrthy, I've found the credit limit links on either the website or mobile app.  CITI even tells me if I'm not eligible due to the length of time since last increase and when the account will be eligible. For example, on mobile app >> select the card account >> select "Account Info" (upper right corner) >> Next to Credit Limit, select "Increase Credit Limit."   If you don't see this, maybe your account is not eligible.
