So after Citibank decided to hang onto my money for another year (after waiting for 18 months already), I was able to join NFCU and am interested in getting their secured credit card.
I don't want to spook them -- how long should I wait before applying for any credit products? Anything else I should avoid doing that could cause AA?
Thanks in advance!
Shouldn't have an issue going with their secured card now
I apped for a card the moment I joined
Me and my wife joined last week and apped for Cash Rewards Visa the same day for card and it was not a instant approval but 24 hrs later it came thru email approved.Got my card today and internal score was 275 and my fico9 is 711 and my Wife hasnt recieved hers yet but her fico9 is 749. Hope this helps, my credit file is thick and hers is very thin
What credit bureau do they pull? I'm trying their pre-qual but keep getting that they can't pull credit because my files are frozen. I lifted the freeze on EQ and EX so far... They soft-pulled EQ for membership. I've unfrozen TU -- we'll see if 3rd time is a charm!
Ok -- going through the pre-qual site -- now they say I'm pre-qualified for everything! That can't be right...
How "safe" is their pre-qual site? Based on my scores, I'm guessing not very!
@designated_knitter Welcome to the Navy family! They pull TU for credit products.
I wouldn't rely on their prequals as they are not reliable. Based on your Transunion score and without knowing what else is on your reports I think you would get a borderline approval for an unsecured cc (meaning a 1000 limit).
Keep in mind with the exception of the flagship, the rest of the cards share UW.
The prequal site is known to be garbage. If you call in to apply you can ask a CSR to check if you are preapproved for any cards. However, if you were fully expecting only qualifying for the Secured card you might be surprised by an approval for an unsecured. If denied, they will offer you the secured card. Good luck!
NFCU pulls mostly Fico 9 TransUnion now I believe for new credit accounts.
They pull TransUnion, Fico 9, for new apps. I wouldn't worry about any type of timeframe to apply after getting your membership. Their pre-qual is one of the most inaccurate from all the reportings on here. I would think you would have no problem with the secured card and as long as you use it correctly it will graduate in 6 months to an unsecured Cash Rewards card with a 2k limit. From what we can tell all of the cards except the Flagship have the same underwriting criteria so it wouldn't matter which one you app for if you don't go for the secured. Flagship is never recommended as the first card to try for since it has a 5k minimum on the credit limit for approval.
All The DP's for a long time have been TU for new cards.
While they may use a certain flavor of FICO ,
they base final approval off of their "secret sauce" Internal scoring model.
JMHO
