I'm I the only person that feels as if Citibank hates them?? I've tried a few times over the last serveral years to get a Costco Visa but always DENIED!! I settled an accout for less than the amount old but that was seven years ago. Since then, I have a clean file that also includes a mortgage. In the past, the reaon for denial was my past history with them which was understandable. I applied again last week ans was told I have too many inquiries which in inaccuarte. My last inquiry was in April 2022. I did apply for an auto loan on the same day as the citi application but that 1 inquiry shouldn't have had impact. Oh well, I think I'm about to give up. It would be nice to have that card as I'm an avid Costco shopper but I dont chase unicorns bacause they do not exist.

Citi can have a VERY long memory.
This time last year I was approved for all their cards but I had others I wanted first. I've check their prequal monthly since September and I've had nothing show. Id try the prequal Home Depot and it would come back with nothing until last week. I do get monthly American Airline prequal lettters in the mail the entire time. I just want one of their cards for the free Fico bank card score.
I do not believe it is because Citi hates you. The issue is that Citi like most banks has a very long memory for people that did them wrong. It can easily take 7 years for them to give you another chance. Also Citi is currently considered unstable so they are not open to risk at this time. The fact that the reason changed can be considered progress. Be aware that when buying a car multiple inquiries can happen as lenders are shopped. While they count as one when they are inside 45 days for scoring that does not stop lenders from counting each one independently if they want. Also Citi does not like recent credit to be issued to their customers so your probably scaring them.
My impression is that for whatever reason the Citi Costco card may be more difficult to obtain than other Citi products. I have a credit rating over 800 and my 8 year old Citi Costco card has a $2k limit while my Citi AA card has a $27k limit.
As many have said, I guess they do have a long memory. I applied again and was just approved with a $7.5k limit. I'm done now. Heading to the garden and my prune early 2024.
You can use any visa at Costco. In fact about the only time I use that Costco card is when I don't have any gas card offerring a better return. For general Costco usage I use my bofa custom cash card since I get 3.5% return as a platinum honors member

Long memory indeed. 13 years since charge off. Now 790 scores 3% utilization 300k in limits, checking and savings accounts... Still no love from CITI on a CC!

Congrats on the approval! Persistence paid off!

I've been denied by Citi several times years ago and I always felt like they did not like me, nor would they approve a credit card for me. I have avoided them for the last 10 years and if I see that a card is by them I just close the application out. I totally avoid them now, and I am doing just fine without it. Currently, I have $250k+ TCL available according to Experian/TransUnion, so I will probably continue to do so rather than take a chance on another denial.
I do have three or four business Citi credit cards/accounts currently open long-term but I figured that they were looking at my business more than they were looking at me. Most of them were not guaranteed by me.
There are plenty of others out there for you to get good credit cards from so if you want to avoid Citi, I think you'll be just fine.
