I need some help searching for my first credit card and I would like your help!! ![]()
I am a 20 year old community college student. I have three part-time jobs - seasonal retail ($7.25 an hour), childcare ($11.47 an hour), and substitute teacher (approx $11.07 an hour).
I am currently an Authorized User on my parents:
Please let me know what you think of the cards below and please let me know of any other cards that you think would be good.
USAA Platinum MasterCard for College Students - my parents are members of USAA
USAA Secured American Express - my parents are members of USAA
USAA Secured Platinum MasterCard - my parents are members of USAA
If you think I am better off not applying for my own credit card and continuing to use my parents credit card as an AU please let me know. If you think it would be best or you think it would be a good idea for me to be added to (a) different credit card(s) as an AU please use the list below of credit cards and advise me on that.
Thanks for all your help and advice. ![]()

1. You can skip all the secured cards because if you have been on the cards you listed from your parents for 6 months you have a credit report:
2. Since you have income, I would actually apply for the regular non student versions of the cards you listed.... just tally up the income and as long as you can put more than $12k/annually between your 3 jobs, grants, and support from your parents I would just do that... you also just need to put 1 company as your job as you can't list 3 companies on an application. If you are in school to become a teacher I would use your teaching position as your company of employement and don't put it as substitute but a "Teacher" and list the income as ALL YOUR INCOME TOTAL under that.
Apply for:
1. USA - something non secured
2. American Express (maybe blue everyday or cash which ever would work better for you)
3. Apple Credit Union
4. Discover it (not chrome or student)
5. check online at citicards.com and chase.com to see if you have pre-qualified offers at either site for a card and apply accordingly IF you have an offer (again don't say student on citicards) both of these companies are GOLD if you get an offer and apply you will be approved!
I would not apply for the Barclay cards as they usually want to see your own history of a year and if you apply for these 5 or 6 above you will be MORE than set.
If you want to edit this list down to say 3 (I personally like these 6 if you could get all 6 but if you must edit down to just 3 I would do the first 3 on my list.
start at the bank you use and branch out, i was in the navy at your age and applied for a credit card through them because they were my bank at the time
