Multiple QS1?

Hey everyone! Been stalking these posts for a while now- all the info has been REALLY helpful when it comes to re-building and establishing my credit. I messed up pretty bad in college and have been working to rebuild ever since.

I was recently approved for a Cap1 Secured Card ($500 CL) and a Cap1 QS1 ($500 CL) on 4/1/15 with 1 Collection acct from 2009 for an apartment that I moved out of my freshman year of college (unpaid $1,000 waiting for it to fall off), 1 Collection from a utility bill (2013) my roommates screwed me but I'm currently paying off, and 1 Medical Bill because my insurance never paid it (trying to dispute it) along with 1 charge off from Chase from a credit card I evidently had when I was 18(2007)- I had no knowledge of this until I pulled my credit report. The balance is $0 -I'm assuming my mom opened something in my name? No idea. Anyway, total collections less than $2,000. I have Student Loans that only have 1 or 2 late payments from a year ago.

All of my scores are just under 600- this is coming from like BARELY 500's so I'm definitely making progress finally! I make pretty good money ($50K year) But I'm in the process of finishing my bachelor's at Penn State Online and I need some extra credit to help with costs. I guess my question is- should I apply for another Cap1 card? I spoke to the EO and they couldn't give me a CLI yet even though I've been at 60-70% uti on both cards and paying the balances off multiple times a month. They suggested that I apply for another credit card. Should I pay the balances before I apply? or should I even apply? If I were to apply, I'd probably want another QS1 for the rewards- is that even possible? I should probably just wait until my credit gets a little better so I can get a decent limit- right? Any advice would be helpful!

Re: Multiple QS1?

It may be possible to get two QS1.   But I wouldn't recommend it.  The AF's do add up.  I think Cap1 limits you to two sub prime or 4 prime cards.  But please verify that with the search feature.   I haven't read up on Cap1.

It is best to diversify your credit card lenders.  If you could find a no AF credit card without rewards but a low interest rate or 0% intro offer, you would be better off.  Maybe check around at credit unions to see what they are offering.  Many (not all) credit unions have more lenient credit standards.

You should also qualify for student loans.   A student loan would be good because it is a installment loan.  It will not hurt your utilization as much as maxing out your credit cards.

Re: Multiple QS1?

Thanks for the feedback! Good point with the AF's- I didn't really think about that. I did find out that you can't have more than 2 Cap1 cards if you have their Journey Student card.. I tried applying for that one and got the "too many capital one accts" and that's why I contacted the EO's office. They did say that you could have up to 5 capital one cards- just not with the Journey? Right now I can't qualify for a student loans because I'm not a full time student.. even though with Penn State's tuition costs you'd think I was. Kind of in a bind because my credit isn't good enough for other lenders yet or a private student loan (from what I read). Maybe when all my scores are above 600-just not sure as to which cards to try for yet? I appiled for the Discover It Student card and was offered their secured card instead, but I didn't take the offer. I'm pretty sure I'm blacklisted from Chase from that charge off in 2007.

Re: Multiple QS1?

There is no AF for the quicksilver, just the quicksilver one. 😉

Re: Multiple QS1?

Btw I just upgraded my platinum card today to the quicksilver. Now I have QuickSilver one with AF and regular QuickSilver with no AF.

Re: Multiple QS1?

Just checked for you. Unfortunately you need good credit to be approved for the regular quick silver. Try apping for the platinum instead. No rewards, but eventually you can upgrade to qs. Good luck. ☺️

Re: Multiple QS1?

You can get 2 QS one's with AF's.  The QS Siggy has the AF & you need excellent credit or whatever Cap One calls excellent credit because the starting limit will be higher.

Re: Multiple QS1?

Thanks for checking! Do you think it'd be a better idea to apply for the Platinum over the Quicksilver1? I've been reading that the platinum sometimes gives higher limits.. I'm assming it's because the APR is like 25% ugh! Thanks for the feedback though!

Re: Multiple QS1?

I have 2 qs one and 1 platinum...

qs1 @ $2k

qs1 @ $2k

platinum @ $2k

Longest card I've had with them was since Sep 2014..EO has always denied my requests for increases, but oh well. All these cards started @ $500 -> $1500 -> $2k

I guess once I hit the full year, I'll be able to get a CLI..

I would definitely apply for another QS1 or Platinum...you can always call and have them add the 1.5% to your platinum, as I did, with no annual fee either. That is I'm sure after you show some history..
