NEW policy for AMEX Applications for existing card holders

Another new change at Amex. So in the past if you were a current card member and applied for another card while logged in and then they declined you for that card you would not get a HP. This is no longer the case. I learned the hard way. I wanted a new card for all the hotel stays through my work so I applied for SPG. To my surprise I was denied. Which I sucked up and figured wait and get my credit in order and apply again in a year. To my dismay I got a HP from TU almost instantly notified of it to. I called Amex and flat out asked them and the 4 different reps all said the same thing. They are no longer basing it on previous soft pulls or Experian. If you make a application for ANY card you WILL get a HP from one the three CRA'S of there choice. Amex. Is really changing and starting to lose there reasons people go and stay with them. First they ended backdating and now HP no matter what. I bet you next they will start HP'ing for CLI. Just a word of caution.

well people aren't with them for a SP denial. essentially if you apply for credit then you risk a HP. it sucks that it isn't what was expected, but we must change our expectations unfortunately.

And I totally understand. It was just a little perk having that extra piece of mind if you got declined you wouldn't get a HP.

that is interesting. If they would pull Tu for me, Id probably get another card I wanted haha. But I am not going to do it as I need to not apply for anything. But that is unfortunate because I definitely saved myself some hard amex pulls from apps that went to decline status.

Sorry to hear about your denial and HP.  Nonetheless you're not the first person that has received a HP and a denial.  It's happened before and been reported on this site.  As for what the CSRs said well they're Amex CSRS who are notoriously misinformed so I wouldn't base any 'new' policy based on what they said.  Now you may be right but it's going to take many more people reporting the same before I'm convinced that there is a new policy.

I applied for Delta on Sunday, not even through amex site but delta app when I was sitting on plane. No hard pull, no approval. amex site says application canceled. I'll report back if I roll the dice and put in a app.

Re: NEW policy for AMEX Applications for existing card holders

I applied for the HHonors Surpass card last Thursday, pretty sure I was denied on 11/23.  If they did another HP I haven't been alerted through CreditKarma or creditchecktotal and I almost always get one for a HP.  I'll update if that changes.

Re: NEW policy for AMEX Applications for existing card holders

I thought the SP was only on cards thru the AMEX site....PRG, Plat, BCE and the like.

I would've never even thought that  a Delta, Dillard's or SPG card could be a SP.

Re: NEW policy for AMEX Applications for existing card holders

Thanks for the advice. I found that today. I applied yesterday for the Plenti AMEX and the Green AMEX and they hard pulled Experian and Equifax. My scores are lower but decent. After some address verification i got the Green AMEX. At least I'm on the AMEX family.
